Advice on picking a caudicifrom
Comments (10)CC, Another one came to mind, one which could handle the humidity well (or at least better than some). And it's American (South) too! Jacaratia corumbensis, from (this year) M2G. MAY is too right, too - both of those are ideal, too. Here's a little tuberiferous Raphio - you cannot imagine, or maybe you can, how large these get.....Jabba-the-Hut-size is not hyperbole. I once remember a beast which had spilled out of an oak barrel into the ground and rooted so deeply, the folks in Shanghai were harvesting the root tips. Here's the Fockea - normally you'd see a vine coming out of the top, but one of the cats (we have our suspects) gnawed it off. Not to worry, it came back in two weeks. But back to Cyphostemma - here's a leafy one that's also available at the same place as all these others are. Cyphostemma cirrhosum. Non-caudex but as cute as a button: Back to the caudexes one more time - Beaucarnea recurvata: I would consider all of these easy to grow and take care of. I'm partial to the Cyphos but you can't go wrong with any of these....See MoreAdenium Garden - Martin in Denmark
Comments (158)Martin, your Bursera look lovely ! I'm quite envious ! :) I would love to grow some from seed. Maybe when I've got some space...I've just put 8 pots of rooted cuttings of P. Afra on ebay as I have too many ! If they find homes, I'll get my heated propagator out again, and maybe try some Commiphora too. I'd really like to try Boswellia, but it's hard to get seeds (and even harder to get them to germinate !) My Bursera is very much a work in progress. When I got it, it had no branches and was about 3 feet long ! The first 6 or so inches was maybe an inch thick - it then tapered off like a whip. It had lost almost all of the few leaves it had whilst in transit (I imported it from Spain !) It's shorter now, and thicker, and has developed some branches - it really is pot luck where they appear - but for me, any branch is welcome considering what it looked like when I got it ! As they are quite rare, I try to root everything I cut off it, and have had some success with that. I'll get some photos later today, or over the weekend....See MoreMy Adeniums and their companions
Comments (96)Thanks Conny I am overjoyed about the seedling auction. I am confident you can do the same. The question is can you part with it when the time comes? Pagan agreed a new thread is needed. And KHZ is just the plant to start it! I hate the pot it's in now because it's going to be a b*tch to pick up and move without disturbing the roots and stability of the plant. Will take some measurements and see what I can find at Cass Bonsai in her size? I can definitely see putting her in the show next year. Maybe even getting a blue ribbon if I can get her to bloom cycle to cooperate....See MoreQuestion about my little Dioscorea elephantipes
Comments (10)HA! I like to think that I do, but I'm sure it's just my imagination. My thoughts were kind of leaning in that direction. That as the caudex grows it'll start "heaving" some of the top dressing aside and become visible on its own so that I won't have to keep moving it aside to peek. I do that about every 3-4 months when I can no longer resist the urge and I have to know what's going on down there. I really only brush aside maybe 8-10 pieces of gravel so I can see that it's still there and not all dessicated and shriveled. I haven't completely unpotted since several months before it started growing this time last year so it's probably been a good 14-16 months since I've seen the entire caudex. I'm thinking that once the vine dies and it goes dormant again next Summer might be a good time to unpot, change the medium and raise just a bit. I think it was a year old when I got it. I'll have to check the email I got from Arid Lands to know for sure. Pretty sure it's at least 3 years old by now....See Moreisde02(zone5b)
