Not completely happy with granite edges...how to fix?
Comments (10)Hi weedyacres-- I am a geologist, and I think I can answer your question about the coloration. Granite is composed of a number of minerals, one being feldspar (plagioclase or othorclase). Depending on the angle the feldspar crystals are cut at, it will reflect a different color. Notice that if you look at your granite from different angles, it may take on different colors. My guess is that the angle in that portion of the stone is causing a cut at two very different angles which causes the reflected light to appear differently. There isn't anything you can do about it--just embrace that it is a natural product with beauty and "flaws". I hope the "stone guys" can weigh in on the difference in finish you notice....See MoreMy Mexican Soup Too Spicy, How Would You Have Fixed It?
Comments (8)When I used to make hot (spicy) chicken wings for a yearly get together, I found that adding butter (called for in the recipe) removed all the heat, so I cut way back on butter--to taste. Seems it would work opposite here. I just searched "too spicy" on the Cooking Forum and the answers often suggest sour cream or dairy. Think you'd have to use a lot less butter than sour cream, leaving your original recipe more intact....See MorePlease Help! Is my antique brown granite cracked?
Comments (25)I have leathered antique brown granite. There is a lot of variation in colors, patterns and mine does have lines here and there. I have one long line in mine that seems to be natural to the stone because it is sort of meandering around. The line in your stone seems to meander around in the same way mine does. I can't feel it. Can you feel the crack/fissure in your antuque brown? Don't know if that means it's a crack or not, but maybe it does. Re regarding the suggestion to draw on it with a magic marker...i do have one area in my antue brown where there is a blob of white quartz that is just in a place that I don't like it. It's natural to the stone and there are several of these in my slabs. Just this one spot I don't like it, so I did draw on it with a magic marker, then gently wiped it off and now that area just blends in with the rest of the slab. So if you do find out that it isn't really a crack, that magic marker trick could work for you. Sounds a bit wacky, but it worked for me. But if it is an actual crack, of course that's a different situation....See MoreHelp! I chose granite that is too busy for my flooring.
Comments (30)It’s like budgets don’t exist on Houzz. Why, when OP stated many times it was not in the budget to change the floors, nor does she want to, is that suggested multiple times here? If anything, if that was in the budget she’d have opted to change the countertop. There is perfect magical design in fantasy land where money isn’t a factor, then there is doing the best with what you can AFFORD. No shame in that. In fact, it should be applauded when someone doesn’t bankrupt themself to chase a perfectly designed space that will eventually grow stale anyway. Good design isn’t always about coming up with the ideal solution, but the most practical one. OP, I think your slate tile is BEAUTIFUL. What whimsical colorations. And how wonderful your husband installed it. We all makes design choices that turn out differently than expected sometimes and (most of us) learn to work around it. I think the cream backsplash you ordered is a good choice to tone things down. I also enjoy seeing a unique and colorful kitchen....See MoreKris Urquhart
