Ciencia Solid Surface Shower Wall... Anyone?
Comments (2)Yes I've seen the colors and no I have not been able to find a source to actually buy samples. Not sure why they won't let people buy samples. Its not that the Swanstone looks bad, it just isn't that 'exciting' for lack of a better word. I stopped into another HD tonight and the lady there was very interested in what I told her about the Ciencia. She is going to contact there American Standard rep to get some info and hopefully some samples....See MoreCultured Marble vs onyx collection vs solid surface shower pan
Comments (78)Lenore, who is installing the granite slab shower? Start there and make your priority be hiring a VERY experienced tile professional - one you have vetted carefully to insure that their qualifications meet your design requirements and product selections. Stone slab installations are not for the B team, and especially in a wet area. Can it be done? Yes, depending upon the structure over which a solid surface stone is installed and the methods used. We install solid surface shower walls regularly, but from an empty cavity which we build to meet all specific design and installation specifications, including the pan. A solid stone slab cannot be supported by the pan (it is not meant to support a slab wall). A slab wall is pinned and tied so it is self supported, not supported by a pan. This is a very complex installation. A LOT to consider. As one example, the thickness of your slab? 2cm. 3cm? (effects the weight load on the space). And I could go on. After you have carefully vetted the qualified tile contractor, have this conversation with them. If you question or want to clarify their recommendations, check back or seek professional advice from other qualified sources. Please consult with a professional onsite. Good luck with your project....See MoreTile vs solid surface shower floor
Comments (2)dancingqueen: "Is a solid surface shower floor better than another tiled floor? I believe I can have solid surface made to the size of the new shower. Are they easier to slip on since they do not have grout? There are two questions inside your single question: (1) what is the best substrate, and (2) what is the best shower floor. Underneath the floor that your feet will be touching is a pan of some sort -- in older homes, a sheet of (usually) lead; in newer installations, usually a layer of plastic of some sort. Those are seamless and (for all intents and purposes) impermeable. If they will leak, they will leak at the margins only. On top of the substrate is the layer that your feet will touch. When we re-did our shower a few years back, we put a layer of liquid sealant (a Laticrete product used in swimming pool installations) on the substrate, then applied some nonslip, rough-surfaced, Korean made 4" square porcelain tiles atop it with epoxy grout between the tiles. Completely waterproof, and as nonslip as one is likely to get in a shower....See Moresolid surface pan combined w tile walls in shower?
Comments (3)I've seen lots of these in pictures and I think they look really nice. If it weren't for my odd shaped shower, I wanted to do this too. For colors, I liked the ones where there wasn't a big contrast between the floor and walls. I don't know, but to me it seemed to accentuate the difference. Although there were some with pans that matched the commode and tub that also looked very clean....See MoreJoseph Corlett, LLC
