Is a Rug really needed? Finding the perfect Ottoman/Coffee Table
Last year we removed our carpet (Yay!) and put down hardwood.
1. I still have not been able to pick out a rug for family room. We have 6 kids so it must be durable and not show a lot of wear and tear. The colors of the room are dark brown (sofas, cream, blue, light beige and gold. The tile around the fire place is black. The rug needs to be 9x11. Not a big fan of floral and traditional - more of a contemporary look is what I am going for.
2. Also we would like to get a new ottoman/coffee table. Want to be able to move it and put our feet on it.
Would love any and all suggestions. Thank you!

6 years agoWith six kids, I would consider something practical, like a lift top coffee table. A rug is not necessary, since it is so much easier to clean a hardwood floor than it is to clean a rug. On the other hand a rug would be attractive and add color to the room.

Ottoman coffee table...pros & cons?
Comments (11)My guess is the upholstered coffee table will be this last decor era's outstanding contribution to interior design. Our kids have had one, in the predominant style--large rectangle, "leather" (but good quality) covered, with an openwork wood shelf below--and its function is beyond everything. This is the center of the home, the kitchen island only a close runnerup. :) I disagree that they can't be "styled," even if there are limitations. Porcelain shore bird collection problematic, but my DIL always has a large (ubiquitous, useful, but attractive) tray on it done up for the season. A basket on the shelf below holds the remotes and other visual clutter. I did have a personal happy moment when I realized that they need not be stiff, stained wood with black leather upholstery. A piece of furniture of the appropriate height in any style can be upholstered and painted, stenciled, gilded, waxed, or whatever. Comments (7)The current coffee table seems too small to my eye, and too dark as well. I'm not sure how much is the photography, but between the sectional, fireplace, and the TV unit, there is a lot of "dark" in your room. Adding color, or choosing a coffee table that is visually light (like the glass top one My3dogs suggested), will add some energy to the room. Comments (34)Love the Kilim style! Perhaps keep watch on your local Craigslist for a good price on a coffee table that is the right size/shape and has nice legs and convert it to an ottoman. Cheap table...nice fabric :). I am sitting here looking at my ugly orange oak coffee table, almost the size of a small dining table, and imagining turning it into a beautiful ottoman. Comments (9)First thing I might do is to have sofas facing and the two chairs looking at t v. That will give you an option of one table between two chairs. For the coffee table, placed perpendicular to the fireplace, an upholstered bench with a tray. 6 years agoHere are two rugs to try on. That coffee table is pretty useless with that sectional, so I'd replace it with a couple of C-tables instead. And I'd replace that generic thing on the back wall with a piece of art.

PRO6 years agoSince you have your colors down already why not try a rug with blue in it then accent with some more gold pillows and gold throws?
