I Did Some Improv Cooking Today

I decided to make Stuffed Collard rolls today which I've made before similar to cabbage rolls or stuffed grape-leaves. But this time I decided to try putting in some Korean Gochujang sauce, it turned out awesome!!

Excellent!

In the write down your recipes thread, I realized that my mother taught me way more about the methods of cooking than specific recipes. Not a specific meatloaf, but how to make meatloaf in general.

I love the ideas behind your Korean stuff collards! I may try collards next time instead of cabbage.

Rita, I make stuffed collards, but Elery would love the addition of gochujang, I'll mention that to him, thanks for doing that sampling!

Did some Guerrilla Gardening today...

The closest I've gotten to guerrilla gardening was to throw some mosquito dunks into a big low spot where my former neighbors used to have an above ground swimming pool. They took it down, but didn't do a good job of filling in the big round depression left by the pool, so it filled up with water whenever it rained. It was a perfect mosquito breeding place. So, I got some mosquito dunks and chucked them over the fence into the "pool". DH thought it was an inappropriate thing to do, but I didn't care. The dunks are not toxic, so I figured no one would be harmed, except the potential mosquitoes. There was a time when I was trying to get rid of tawny daylilies, and my neighbors got tired of me asking if they wanted some. If I had read this thread way back then, I might have gotten an idea of what to do with all those daylilies! Sally

Looking at your layout, I don't think you have the room for a 36" range. You will need a filler between the blind corner and any adjacent cabinet. That nixes your pullout that you have there. And you have minimal landing space on the other side next to a major traffic route. That will leave you with a 30" range fitting MUCH better. You could do a 30" induction range and separate wall oven elsewhere, or something like the GE Cafe with the griddle and double ovens below. That would give you the maximum versatility in the smallest space. If you want to grill, use a grill pan or do it outside. It doubles your requirements for ventilation, which you haven't discussed at all. That will get pretty expensive as you will be required to have makeup air for the CFM that you would need to have for a grill. In your situation, I'd put a separate under counter oven in place of the under counter MW. Maybe a speed oven, but the best place for the MW is next to the fridge as that's the logical flow of snackers and reheaters. I'd also really revisit having the work table as island. You could make the island work a lot harder by having a small prep sink on it and putting the trash there as well. That would give you a better prep zone with less walking. I'd suggest swapping the pantry and fridge. You need a straight shot from the fridge to the sink to make the prep zone work best. And that involves water access. So, you need the fridge at the bottom of that aisle, or a prep sink on the island. Or both. Otherwise, you're adding a lot of roadwork to making dinner.

Lovin what is happening with the thick posts. Adding a railing is also a very doable option. I particularly love how the posts thicken up at the bottom. Very grounding! And that's the thing with foundation planting - it really grounds the house. (I have to figure that out at my own house now that my house has new siding, doors, windows.) It's really fine that you don't know how to do that. GW has some great forums with folks who would be more than glad to help you figure out some low maintenance, substantial scrubs/plantings for around the foundation. You can also just look around your neighborhood/town at what people have done. Pay attention to their choice in shrubs and make sure you are seeing mature plants so you can figure out placement. It makes a TON of difference. And, for the second time in 5 minutes, I'm with pfmastin. I still really prefer the current paint color and brick. I like it light. It's really just such a good, fresh look! That being said, I know you were disappointed from the beginning with it and taste is taste. Would you consider just going with a creme with an undertone that takes you from the yellow if that is what is bothering you? Be careful with tans and beiges, or you can end up with a bandaid/pinky tone. IMHO, neutral and earthy, grayed out tones are good for the bones of a house. Punches of color can be added in porch furniture, front doors, plantings, pots, shutters, etc...

I love improv cooking. I haven’t been doing as much as I would want to though. We are taking a lot more trips out of state so we are eating out more than in.

I've never thought of stuffing collard greens, and we love the taste so will have to give this a try - thank you! I do use collard greens quite often in place of spinach or kale in many recipes.

They have a taste very similar to grape leaves. The stem is quite tough so it's better to trim the thickest part of it out some. And the leaves are a little more tough than regular cabbage leaves so a knife is needed to cut it when eating but other than that it is really worth the try. If you like collards a lot and you like stuffed cabbage you will love it.

Rita, I also think it's easier to roll the collards than it is to roll cabbage leaves, the cabbage always seems to split and tear. I also think the taste of collards is similar to cabbage, so it was a natural progression to roll them when I didn't have cabbage.

I'm still uncertain about the gochujang, though, I'm such a wuss...

I just used a little of the gochujang sauce, mixed it in with the stuffing and also added it to the beef broth/tomato sauce that I poured over the rolls. It's a Korean chili sauce, but a very distinctive flavor over other types. We are able to buy it in our local Publix grocery here, but probably most areas it would have to be found at specialty grocers.

I've always added Korean chili flakes to my stuffed cabbage rolls. If gochujang sauce is sweet, I would not use it myself, but I do like the idea of substituting collard greens for cabbage. When I make cabbage rolls, I also trim (horizontally) the thickest part of the rib on the leaves, to make them easier to roll - but only for the outer leaves.

Thanks for this suggestion, as I love collard greens!
