Need Advice on built in Bookshelves NOW Carpenter is here!
Comments (7)We have some "discrepancies" in our ceiling for the kitchen and what we are doing with our crown molding is that the crown will be mounted onto a rail and the rail mounted to the top of the cabinet - and that rail piece will grow or shrink as necessary - we have a 1/4 inch discrepancy with one cabinet, so on the one edge, we will see about 1/4 of an inch of the rail and on the other edge, we will see about 1/2 of an inch of the rail. The crown itself remains level with the ceiling. I will tell you that YOU are likely the only one that will notice most of those discrepancies once everything is in place. Most people look at crown molding and see that it's there and it creates a finished look, but they don't look at the intricacies of the crown unless you get something super elaborate....See MoreNeed advice re: installing wall-mounted bookshelves
Comments (3)The problem is that anchoring to even steel studs will not take all them much weight without blocking to spread the load over a larger area. The folded edge of the stud will flex under load and the drywall start to crack around the attachment points. Bookcases would likely be a better option, or some vertical supports to the floor from the shelves to transfer some of the load. Even relatively small cross sections of hardwood usually have a high load capacity vertically. You could use small 'posts' at the front and back of the shelves to get weight to a lower shelf, and finally to the floor preserving a lot of the 'open' appearance. Even a 1 inch x 2 inch 'post' from a decent hardwood has incredible vertical load strength (parallel to the 'grain'. You do not need 2x4s hardwood sections for something like this....See MoreNeed office table bookshelves ideas for our home study room
Comments (8)In my experience teenagers rarely study out of their rooms and a kids table is a pretty useless piece even for the 6 yr. old. I think get the stuff you have to have first and then see if there is space for a sofa that is quite a small space for 2 kids to work in not to mention the age difference. I have teenage International students and they do google classroom but it needs to be done in a space where there is no interruption so I guess it depends on how you are working this ....See MoreAdvice on paint colors for built-in bookshelves in open concept?
Comments (5)Thanks All! Sounds like we all agree to get rid of the red wall first :) I like the idea of priming the cabinets and then seeing how we feel with them in a "white family" of colors. Good idea to replace the beams - the bright white is so jarring. In our current home, we used White Dove for trim and Revere Pewter on walls, with warm wood floors, which actually made it all feel warm and not sterile. I want to see if White Dove could be a good choice with the light in the new house since it's a warmer white without a strong undertone. Possibly lighter shelves up top and a darker tone for the cabinets (and new doors)? We'll also likely repaint the kitchen cabinets white so I am a little worried about white walls, white cabinets being too much? Possibly a darker grey/green on lower cabinets with white shelves and/or white with colored backboard?...See MoreUser
