White vs. Black sink

Kitchen remodel starting soon and I need to pick a sink! The cabinets are white (shaker with raised panel), the appliances are all black stainless (Samsung and LG), the counter is Cambria Berwyn. We are keeping our existing sink fixtures (touch activated, really nice), which are brushed nickel. I think white sink will look the best, but we have a white sink now (no idea what it's made of) and it shows surface imperfections and, worst of all, STAINS! like nobody's business. A black sink would hide stains and probably match our appliances but I worry it will look odd with the light colored counter and cabinets. Also worried it will look bad to have brushed nickel sink fixtures with a black sink. Thoughts?

Sara, I think you'te choosing a black sink for the wrong reasons. I'm guessing Joseph posted so you could see a dark sink with lighter counters. I have a black slate sink with white granite and love it but if you think a white sink would look best, you should concentrate on finding a good white sink. I know I've read reviews and threads on this forum, if you search.

However, if you decide on a black sink, I have a chrome faucet and here's a photo of one with what might possibly be nickel faucet. I think that woild be fine.

Elkay Quartz Luxe 36" Short Apron in Caviar (black). This is one of the nicest sinks available.

I sent a lady to this lady's house and she bought this sink in Charcoal (gray).

Thanks, Joseph! I should have specified that I will need a non-apron front sink since my cabinets were made with little sponge holders there. This sink also has black hardware for the faucet. I wonder how it would look with brushed nickel?

The white color has been discontinued replaced with Dune. The lighter enamel interior is actually a sand color. The black enamel is better for high temp cooking so it's used on their frypans, grill pans and woks. It's better for that purpose. It's definitely not inferior, just better suited for the job. The only line that has the black enamel on all the pieces in the black matte or satin black. The advantage is the black will season with use, and doesn't show staining as the sand enamel will over time.

Hi Joseph....I was hoping you'd respond! :). I'm an avid fan of yours (blush). We prefer an undermount sink because it's easier to wipe counters off onto the sink and as well because the emphasis will be on the countertop (Cristallo quartzite with gold and copper veining). The only reason we are considering a top mount (which we have now) is because it's easier to replace the sink (hubby might be able to do himself), should it need to be replaced in the future. I'm a bit of an OCD when it comes to the house/kitchen looking pristine all the time (and I both cook and bake A LOT). We are having a difficult time deciding on what sink (Brand, etc.) and color to get. White is out of the question as it's too intrusive next to our stone. Hubby wants a copper (my original idea), but two factors for us to consider is: We have hard water, and heard that may spot the sink, and also PRICE. Paying 2-3K for a sink is out of the question (financially) for us. We are stomped! Our kitchen cabinets are honey maple, our island (in works right now) will be a creamy white color, and then we have the Cristallo quartzite.

Thank you all for your comments so far. I have a white sink now and would never get another. I thought the black sink was something a little different and would look sharp with the white counter and dark cabinets and tie in the other black accents (tinted glass on the hood (Elica Como... on the same wall as the sink) and the pendant lights (Quoizel Spiral Mini) over the island behind the sink. I just saw a graystone sink, which might not be as sharp/harsh as the black that you are all agreeing on. Ohhh the dilemma!

FWIW, my mother had a cast iron black sink and it showed water spots like crazy. Other materials may be different or it might be different if you have better water.

I tear out black cast iron sinks regularly. Not comparable to quartz.

Yeah not considering cast iron, and I'm also not concerned about water spots (we do have pretty hard water in our area), more the staining from coffee grounds and other food that does not clean up out of my current white sink, along with scratches, which show even more because of the food staining. That photo barncatz does look like black sink with silver faucet will look fine. I will have a tough time choosing between brushed nickel and matte black cabinet hardware.

I went gray composite sink with light countertops and although we haven’t moved in I think I’m gong to love it even if for size alone. Prior to this I had a Kohler porcelain farmhouse sink on dark brown also loved. However in this case since kept prior cabinets couldn’t do farmhouse.

sbp59, I think that's the exact faucet we have, and love it! We got so used to the touch-enabled faucet that we stupidly try to tap to turn on other people's sinks =P

Look at the Silgranite type sinks. I think white would look better than black, but something in between might be good too. I think there is a mushroomy color... Blanco used to send free samples PDQ.

I'm thinking a dark gray for the sink might be what we go with, but I'll need to bring a counter sample with me to see how I feel.
