I'm losing a favorite store, too, in England. They say that they will continue their mail order business for a while, but the B&M store will close at the end of the year.

Do you have Aldi near you? They always sell more German food products (and Advent calenders) as Christmas approaches. My Dad used to have me purchase enough of their stollen to put on a coffee for his whole church. I mailed it all to him from Missouri to Georgia. I don't know if they had an Aldi in the whole state of Georgia, and certainly he did not find a bakery that made them. I'm sure others can tell you that Trader Joe's has German import foods, but I have never shopped there.

I, too, have had an email from an online store going out of business-- PureRest Organics, from whom I bought a fine quality wool mattress pad to go on top of my cushy but hot foam mattress. I ended up buying one of those for my Dad, too.

No Aldi yet, but there is one supposed to be coming up. Thinking about where to get my Christmas cookie ingredients like the vanilla sugar I am used to. I could probably find some of the things on Amazon, but it’s not the same. I hate to sound like I am spoiled, but it really takes little to make me happy. Having the Vanille Kipferl taste like they did for 100 years in this family is one of them.

Iris if you still have the container the vanilla sugar is in do a search for it. There are German communities among others that use many of the same products especially in the Dakotas through to the Great Lakes.

Have you tried a LIDL grocery? It's a chain grocery with German roots and there are several in SC. Look it up on line and locate a store near you.

If you have a Costplus World Market near you check them out. I buy all kinds of international foods there around the holidays.

I found 6 pages of German foods. But at the holidays there is a bunch of stuff that isn’t on the website.

Vanilla sugar sounds really yummy, so I'll start with Penzey's. What are the chances of procuring just one simply German cookie recipe to experiment with the VS? Many thanks for any sharing. (We have an Aldi right across our street.)

If your sugar is Dr Oetker my World Market carries the small packets but it is easily available on line if that is the kind that you use. World Market and Aldi's normally have it starting in October. Will sound strange but the health foods section of my grocery store is where it is normally found.

Thank you all! I really liked German Deli. It was probably a family owned one, the “thank you for your order” was usually written by the same 3 people over the years. They did go a bit overboard with the reusable ice packs in the boxes, but I never had a problem getting melted chocolate. Hope one of the suggestions here has everything in one stop. Running low on the Fennel tea bags, so I am going to start looking soon.
