Stair runner: repeat pattern too big?

William K

After repainting our house interior BM Grey Owl (and banishing the prior owner's yellow and black color scheme!), we are trying to pick new stair runners to replace the very traditional black stair runner with something that fits the new transitional grey decor. We were going to make a custom runner from a broad loom rug, and we are stuck with cut pile options as we have a naughty kitty that would shred a looped or Wilton woven rug. We found these two options, the Nourtex Euro Paris (Reflection color) and the Stanton Titian (Sky color). I've attached photos of the two samples on the staircase (Nourtex on top and Stanton on bottom) as well as larger pictures of the patterns on both. What do people think between these two? I probably prefer the colors of the Nourtex more, but I worry that its large pattern repeat (19" x 27") may be too large for a stair runner, as most runners I've seen have a much smaller pattern repeat. Do larger pattern repeats look terrible on staircases?
