we need to centre this hole inbetween our kitchen windows so that we can install a chimney hood range. It needs to be moved about five in to the right (when looking from the interior). How should we do this?

Comments (10)dont laugh, this COULD work I think...not sure how heavy your urn will be, but what if you could use a post (6 inch square seems like maybe it will be hard to find, and expensive unless you can find a scrap piece, so you may actually have to MAKE a 6 inch square base out of multiple 2x4's securred together) and hat boxes? I think you could make this very creative and choose whatever look that fits with how you are decorating. I've seen octagonal shaped boxes, victorian patterned boxes, just about whatever you want if you dont want it already decorated, I think you can get plain brown ones, especially at the craft stores, and then paint it how you like. Places like Hobby lobby, Michael's for the plain ones, then TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Kohls' etc. would be a place to start for a patterned one. Stack the boxes up as high as you need them, glue them together and then you could cut out an opening in each of the boxes to match the post width and depth and just use them as a decorative surround. Or if you are set on a pedistal then I'd think that again, build your own post putting 2x4's together, and then enclose it with molding from top to bottom and then also around the top and base areas. you will be doing what people do when they put columns at their front doors, pvc columns' wrapped with molding....See MoreConstruction loan disbursement help -- how to get the amount I need
Comments (19)The GC will be required to build the garage if it is in the original loan documents that were bank approved. It would not be allowed to be built by a third party not under the control and supervision of the bank approved GC. If you or the Amish gentleman have a contractors license and insurance, the GC can certainly subcontract that portion to you, and you can build it. If the GC agrees to that. I would not plan on that happening. If the GC would take on the liability of hiring you as a laborer under his workman’s comp, then he could do so, and instruct you as an employee to build the garage. I would not plan on that happening either. Free liability is a hard no thanks. In all situations, it is the GC that will need to be paid by you via bank disbursements for building the garage, as that is the professional that the bank approved to be responsible for the build. The bank has not approved you to be involved as a co GC, or to work on their investment, or to hire whomever third part. All job responsibility goes through your GC. You are the funding conduit between the bank and the GC as the owner only. You don't ”recoup” cost overruns. Those are expenses that add to the COST of the build, but not the VALUE of the build result. They are spent and gone. Your savings account is permanently depleted until such time as you add to it again. If the bank agrees to reimburse you for the documented overruns, then you will just have to pay it out all over again when the specific loan amount runs out, and the project still needs that money to reach completion. If you do manage to cut build costs somewhere , that does nothing for your savings account. It does affect the loan amount. Cutting things also affects the value of the house, which will likely require a reappraisal and redo of the loan. That will require you to bring more cash to the table to cover the value shortfall. Comments (5)It does appear that the exterior soil is higher than the slab. That will always allow water into the interior. The grade away from the home should start 6" below the sill plate, and extend away from the home 10 feet or more. If you closed during winter weather, where final grading was yet to be done, that could be one explanation for improper grading. But this is a builder issue, and should start with him, and his warranty for his work. If you are unable to get a satisfactory solution after those conversations, then pictures and measurements are useful tools when visiting your code inspection office. If you do not have a laser level to shoot the horizontal line, you can use a water level. It is simple and inexpensive to build. But, I would highly recommend buying a 3 axis laser level for general home use. It's great for hanging pictures, and all kinds of home projects....See More

They have saved my butt a few times when dealing with bricked in vents. They come in different configurations.

Get a mason, remove the brick (there no weight above it), move your vent and re-brick using existing if it can be used, if not you can purchase this brick, it's called Red Vertical Score brick should be available at most brick selling outlets and make a nice neat repair. It's a very simple project.Good luck.
