End of August in NH (photo heavy)
Comments (10)Thanks so much everyone! So happy you like the photographs! Denise, yes, that's a variegated Solanum jasminoides in that container. The plectranthus is 'Lemon Twist', is that the variety you lost? Would you like me to send you cuttings? I've got piles and piles of that plant right now and most of it is going to go with the first frost. ~~ Garden coach? Sounds like something I'd like to do. I"ve never heard of that before. Is it a CA thing? Cynthia, yes that's a Phygelius that Wendy gave me last year. I just love that plant! Chelone, you are a hoot, 'subterranean bomb shelter'.... ROTFLOL - although, I've been REALLY wishing I had a greenhouse this year. Monique, you know you are welcome to visit any time. I'd love for you to see the containers before the frost hits. Comments (8)Thanks Norma, Marian and Michelle! Norma, There is nothing quite like the early morning light in the gardens. Like you I absolutely love it and even when I'm supposed to be doing something else sometimes I just have to grab my camera and record things when the light is right. ~~ The patio is stamped concrete. We waited a few years before being able to do it but are so happy we waited until the budget allowed. We love the color and texture of the patio also. Michelle, ROTFLOL, yes the patio is a lovely place to sit but I never seem to do it. I have all these benches all over the place that I almost never use. I LOVE to have company so I can sit and enjoy the space. ~~ That hydrangea is a standard Hydrangea paniculata 'Tardiva'. It has been in there for a very long time and is the highlight of the shade area this time of the year. That phlox I've photographed it against is my favorite 'Nora Leigh'. Comments (8)Thanks Twix&Dud....It's nice to know folks appreciate the pic's...:) I took a nice vacation to the beautiful state of New Hampshire...spent a few weeks in the Great North Woods....looking for Moose..It was a blast. Thanks so much Jan....Maybe they will be less stressed next season....us too...LOL LOL..;) Thank Ya Jen...It;s nice to still have a little beauty and colour...this time of year...:) Appreciate it Debra...:) I have to get Chartered Course....I have heard nothing but great things about it..:) Thanks Again Betsy...:) Thanks you Tom...I hope to have a few more bloom yet...they made it through a crazy growing season....again...LOL Hey Jane....All I do is place the pots close together...they are on slabs of concrete..allows for good steady drainage....and holds some warmth during the night hours. I have a small border of bricks to block the wind. I used to always use straw bales around the pots, all the way around (Wrapped with plastic twine) This keep them warm and the wind off them too. I use the leaves that I mulch up after the first hard frost and scatter them over the pots, allowing the spaces between the pots to fill in with the finely chopped leaves. Thats it...let Mother Nature do her thing and in Spring as they start to pop up I pull the pots out and let them get sun and air...:) Last Year I didn't even do anything special for them and even the little one gallon pots made it fine...I think blocking the cold north winds/cold and stopping the wind from drying out the pots totally is the key. I think stablized and constant temps seem to be the key too. I believe the temps going up and down all the time do the most harm. I think if you stabilize the temps they are and do, fine...IMHO I found this to be true with most perennials...not just daylilies. Hope that helps Jane...Good Luck with yours...I'll be doing about 150 pots this Winter and hopefully they will all be ok...again..:) Rick...See MoreJournal - End of August - Somebody stop the weeds!
Comments (15)I have already begun my fall chores of cleaning out some flower beds and the garden. They looked so bad, I just started cutting and pulling things. Christie, that is the Ozarks for you; we are so rocky that the rain just goes down very quickly. We are severely dry here again too and I watered some trees yesterday and also the newly set roses. The mole runs are so bad, the water doesn't run far, just disappears down a mole hole! Don't know if I am getting much good from the water or not. The yard has certainly gone into the fall mode. Mowing and trimming are much less now. I am not sorry about that. EP, glad to see you back. I just finished painting the trim in the dining room. It took about two days. Sure glad to get that done. We have lots of outside trim on some of the outbuildings to do, but will wait for cooler weather to complete that. We are still feeding the birds, both the good, bad and the ugly! The grackles thought the waterer I was using around one of the trees was their private spa......they were really enjoying it. I finally found a few Monarch butterfly larvae on one of the milkweed plants. We still haven't had the number of butterflies that we normally do. Also, I noticed a tremendous amount of seed pods on the asclepias tuberosa. The entire top is just full of pods. I wonder if they ever self-seed? Checked out Lowes this week, but they had very few sales on anything in the garden department. I need a few evergreens for around the foundation at the back door. Glad to hear you are ok Yolanda. We keep watching the news and are just astounded by everything. I just want to see someone get some food and water to those folks on the highway by the SuperDome! Where are the FEMA people? They need someone to monitor the news to find some of these pockets of desperation. The women with tiny babies just really break my heart. Let's hope millions is raised by all the upcoming concerts and drives. gld...See Moreingrid_vc so. CA zone 9
