Still Blooming...End Of August.....

These pic's were taken in full sun and are not very good.....but the blooms were still Purdy.....amazing for the end of August......

It must be nice to still be getting some bloom. My last bud on Terry Lyninger opened Saturday. That was it for me....yours are all gorgeous, Rick!
Hopefully, we'll all have better weather for our dl's next season. We've finally started getting some rain, so most of mine that had gone summer dormant are putting up new growth again!
Keep posting your photos Rick, for those of us who have no more blooms. I for one, look forward to seeing all the photos of everyone's late bloomers. :)

Thanks everyone for the nice comments on the seedlings. I'm trying to get some late ones so I've been pleased to see them still blooming. All but the last one still have at least one more bud. Rita, I know you like the yellow/gold ones. Nancy, my Indy Rhapsody is about done too. This might have been the last bloom--either last or next to last. I'm very pleased with seedling number 4. It's a first year seedling and keeps looking better every time it blooms. Seedling #3 is a second year and I'm amazed that it had two scapes on one fan and a decent bud count. None of its siblings were nearly as good. maryl and Rita, seedling 1 is a second year seedling and I really didn't remember it from last year, but this year it has very good branching and bud count. Hope it continues. avedon, Elegant Finale is one of my favorite lates. It's well named. It does look elegant and has good branching and bud count. Kay, I love red too and Indy Rhapsody is a beautiful shade of red. It's way taller than its registered height though so I need to move it out of the front row! Val

As August draws to a close I have four books going at once. First is the fifth in George RR Martins's Game of Thrones series, A Dance with Dragons. I am halfway through, but am reading it as an ebook when I travel. We've been traveling a lot this summer and I do expect to finish it. I'm not in a hurry. It may well be years until he releases #6, and who knows if we will ever see #7, or if #7 will indeed complete the story? Second is Superfreakonomics, which my husband Tom read, enjoyed, and passed along to me. It is every bit as engaging as the original Freakonomics was, and I do recommend it to people who enjoy this kind of book, an analysis of human behavior based on economic principles written for a popular audience. Third is The Time in Between by Maria Duenas, which I am reading for my book club. This hefty volume is a historical novel based in mid 20th century Spain. It is moving along well so far. At this point it does not seem like great literature, but the plot has pulled me in and I am enjoying it. If it keeps on this way, I'm sure I will find it to be a thumping good read. And if it does not, well, I will thump it down on the floor in disgust. Finally I am looking forward to opening up a book I just got from the library. It is Elizabeth is Missing by Emma Healey. This novel about an early stage dementia patient who suspects a murder caught my attention this summer in a bookstore in Edinburgh, but I decided to wait until I returned home to read it. Apparently it is as popular here in the US as it was in the UK, because I had to go on the waiting list for several weeks before I could hold it in my greedy hands. Finally I should mention that I also read The Art of Hearing Heartbeats, last month's book club selection. Not to my taste, I'm sorry to say, but I believe it does have its fans. I found it slight. I'm all for reading lighthearted fun, and do so unabashedly, but not when it earnestly tries to be Significant. Rosefolly

Mantis, you are right! On the last set the first has a wrong color of the eye, not as purple of course, so the cell phone got it right, it's just not as bright, and more pink like my old camera captured. None of this added warmness, yellowness. My Yoke is Easy No.1 is right. I should have chosen something else to compare though. Yeah cell phone pics are crisp and detailed, i just do not understand this need for vividness and enhanced colors. My flowers as pale as they are are beautiful to me. I did read in one review that f/ something matters, but not sure what it is and how to change. The camera was overexposing and underexposing, too difficult to get a nice pic. It shouldn't be like this. Yes of course I was waiting for the green light. Kate, thanks! She is our senior kitty and she sleeps a lot. Your phone takes very nice pictures! They look very natural to me. Oh even a quick resizing and tagging that's nice. How interesting that your brother said so. I actually played with a portrait mode on the phone, I like the background blurred but it makes the file size significantly bigger, like from 2MB to 10. Still couldn't get a natural color )) Used to have a Noid just like this! It was pretty. Thanks Brad! That's a nice return policy. I resize in Win10 Photos app. I just need to go one by one, and after the latest unexpected and unavoidable Windows update our laptop got so slow, so that's why it takes forever, Other than that it resizes them to a pretty good size.

Rick - They sure are purdy - especially SPACECOAST FANCY DANCER. I only had BLACK EYED STELLA in bloom today. I have a few more buds on FIRST KNIGHT, and CHARTERED COURSE has just put up a rebloom scape.

I only have True Grit and a smattering of Stella.Mister Lucky has a rebloom scape and Alpine Snow gives me a yellowish bloom now and then.Thanks for posting your pretty blooms to brighten the day.

Hi Rick. Your DLs are very pretty.

The DLs are over in the established bed, and my 2006 large bed is looking pretty bare, but there was a bloom on Summer Wind, Lavender Stardust (potted), Tune The Harp (has at least 6 buds coming), Caramba, Golden Scroll, Party Pinafore, Thy True Love, Lady Beware, a couple of yellows, and a red or two.

Would you tell me again how you store your DLs in pots over the winter? I said I wouldn't, but I did get more that I potted, and since I lost more than I thought at first last winter, I want to do better this year. I have a huge bark/chipped wood pile that I could spread out to hold all my potted DLs, but it is out in the open. If the pots were set deep, to the rim of the pot, and then mulched a bit, do you think this would work?

My Golden Scroll gave up about a week ago. Love that Spacecoast Fancy Dancer. Still have a few odd ones blooming, but not much. Keep posting as long as they keep blooming.

Thanks Twix&Dud....It's nice to know folks appreciate the pic's...:) I took a nice vacation to the beautiful state of New Hampshire...spent a few weeks in the Great North Woods....looking for Moose..It was a blast.

Hey Jane....All I do is place the pots close together...they are on slabs of concrete..allows for good steady drainage....and holds some warmth during the night hours. I have a small border of bricks to block the wind. I used to always use straw bales around the pots, all the way around (Wrapped with plastic twine) This keep them warm and the wind off them too. I use the leaves that I mulch up after the first hard frost and scatter them over the pots, allowing the spaces between the pots to fill in with the finely chopped leaves. Thats it...let Mother Nature do her thing and in Spring as they start to pop up I pull the pots out and let them get sun and air...:) Last Year I didn't even do anything special for them and even the little one gallon pots made it fine...I think blocking the cold north winds/cold and stopping the wind from drying out the pots totally is the key. I think stablized and constant temps seem to be the key too. I believe the temps going up and down all the time do the most harm. I think if you stabilize the temps they are and do, fine...IMHO I found this to be true with most perennials...not just daylilies. Hope that helps Jane...Good Luck with yours...I'll be doing about 150 pots this Winter and hopefully they will all be ok...again..:)
