Frame for pocket replacement window?

Hello to you all! I am currently in the middle of a complete bedroom remodel and ive hit a bit of a snag with the window replacement.

My intention is to replace my old window with a new frame and a pocket replacement window. Trouble is, I don't know much about how to go about it. I haven't had any luck with searching for info online, as everything just seems to point to tutorials on replacing the window itself. My problem is that I can't seem to find info on either where to buy a frame for the replacement window to sit in, or how to go about building one for myself.

I want to do it this way because if I need to replace the window years from now for some reason, I can just pop the new replacement window into place without disturbing the outside trim again.

Any advice is GREATLY appreciated! :)

Search for a millwork shop. They should be able to build you one. Many lumber yards have millwork shops too, so you can try them.

If you are replacing the frame, just go with either a new construction window or a full framed unit.

If you are deadset on replacing it with an insert, most window frames are just comprised of 3/4" thick material in a depth that is relative to the wall depth.

I'd agree with that as well. In this case, you will want to maintain uniformity. Todd's point on the fact that 15 year old homes are often not realistic candidates for a pocket replacement is very valid as well due to the type of products and installations used in that period. More generally speaking to your question though, the factors that would point to a full frame over pocket install are: 1) No option due to existing window style (ie: if existing windows are new construction vinyl) 2) Existing water leakage or questionable original installation 3) Substantial rot to the frame (not just the exterior trim pieces) 4) If light/visible glass is at a premium. This is common on homes that have few, or smaller windows to start with.

They could do a full frame without nail nail flange and and out ut into the rough opening or do as insert and put inbetween tour interior wood casing, this would give mire glass loss. From the edge of the frame to the edge of glass will be roughly 3”.

Glazing durometer or glazing "gasket". Single pane or double pane window? Regardless, you will need to deglaze the window from the sash/frame, replace the seal, and reinstall the glass.

Nate, we replaced our old sashes with sash kits rather than going the pocket window route.

(Had several contractors look at the situ and they all pushed pocket windows; when sash kits were mentioned, it appeared that none of them knew what sash kits are or that they even exist!). Ended up being a DIY project.

Quite easy to install in our case. Just removed the old jamb liners; replaced with new jamb liners from the sash kit and popped in the sashes. (Maybe also the parting stops were removed but can't remember for sure.). Existing interior and exterior trim is left intact and all the work is done on the interior side. No ladder work on second floor windows.

The other advantage over pocket windows is that you don't lose any glazing area to pocket window frame. This was important to us because we have a lot of shade and froggy gray days.

We used WeatherShield sash kits. Purchased directly from the factory during a Customer Appreciation sale. (Factory is within 100 miles of where we live; placed the order and windows were ready for pick up within about 3 weeks, IIRC.)

We got unfinished pine so there was extra work in finishing. Didn't get clad because the windows are all under a two story porch so not exposed to the elements. Huge improvement over the old single pane sashes.

If you have the frame From the window being tore out just copy that. like Eric said, most are just 3/4 sides and top but would also pribaly have a 1 /2 thick sill. If you wanna proceed let me know and. I can try to walk you through it.
