Drywall repair: Need an orange peel texture tip

How can I match an orange peel drywall texture without spraying or splattering?

One person told me to use a sponge with undiluted joint compound. Haven’t tried it yet, but I’m not optimistic because I played with a sponge in prep for knockdown and it was a fail. Do I need a certain type of sponge?

I was thinking small foam paint roller with watered down joint compound?

For knockdown, a pro told me to use a paintbrush to stipple on joint compound, then use a knockdown or drywall knife to knock down the texture. I’m actually getting better at that (with the metal knife - not the soft knockdown knife).

But I still need to figure out how to create the orange peel texture in kitchen, closets and possibly bathroom.

When I painted the ceilings with thick flat paint and a 3/8” (?) nap roller, it left a very fine orange peel texture on the smooth ceiling which I liked. I do need to match a thicker texture in the kitchen and closets though.

Any suggestions that don’t involve airborne material?
