Summer song rose..Austin
Comments (2)Summer Song isn't a light shade. It is a rich orange coloured rose....See MoreExcited to start growing roses, starting with a few David Austins
Comments (4)As far as the plants you are holding off on, they should be fine another week or two in their pots. Just make sure you keep them watered. It would be much more disturbing to them to plant them and later dig them up. Also, while there is no real risk of repotting them, I just don't think it is worth the trouble for a couple of weeks. As far as books, I have the Classic Rose by Peter Beales. It is pretty good. If you can find one, David Austins, rose books are pretty good, they concentrate more on English Roses, but they have some pretty good advice on general things. I picked one up from the mid 90s at a Half Price books for $4. Now, there is also his book "The Rose", but it is quite pricey and more about individual roses. As for love song, I typically plant my roses along my house about 18-24 inches back from the slab so your distance is fine. Enjoy Love Song, I planted it earlier this year and it is on its second flush. Wish I could help in regard to your particular area, but I am no where near you....See MoreAustralian rose growers - David Austin roses at Bunnings?
Comments (4)hehe this is one I can answer ! I have two Bunnings nearby, and seem to end up at one or the other most weeks. In my area (south east ish suburban Melbourne ) Bunnings can get bare root ("body bag") roses as early as late May-June. As a rule, these tend to be really cheap end roses; think well out of patent classic/popular hybrid teas similar to Mr Lincoln , Eiffel Tower, Julias rose, Just Joey etc or floribundas like white iceberg, europeana, Bonica and lilli marlene. But they do get a few of the older more obscure Austins. In previous years I have seen Yellow Charles Austin, The Dove, Perdita, Claire Rose, Cymbeline, Tamora, lucetta, Happy Child etc, It seems to be luck of the draw, because different stores have different varieties..To be honest, I ended up chucking a lot of the body bags of mine, as they were either dud plants, not suitable for my area and didn't grow well, or they were bought in a bargain induced frenzy and were just..wrong.. My advice is to look up all the older austins and make a checklist of ones you would like, so you can avoid the ones you don't have room for. Still have Cymbeline tho..shes lovely. and its a good way of experimenting on the cheap. Last year they were all around 9.95 (year before they were 8.95 I think), They usually have higher priced more popular PBR roses nearby ( think Pierre Ronsard, Ebb Tide, burgundy iceberg, etc). I think they were around 12.95? Warning- They dont tend to be very good quality , so check them thoroughly for dodgy canes etc, try to get a good look at the graft area, and you have to get them early, as the best ones go very quickly. I think they just get the one shipment, and the rest stay till they get sold...One cane wonders abound! Keep an eye out for the Delbards - they seem to appear a couple of weeks later as "potted barerooted" for around $ 16 /18. That is, bareroots that appear to have been potted in the minimum sized pot available. They look to be a bit better quality with more and thicker looking canes. Either Delbards is keener on quality control, or the plants keep better that way....See MoreDavid Austin roses vs kordes roses
Comments (52)I have a loamy clay here in zone 6. I have tried a number of Austins and I loved them, but I usually ended up with some kind of foliage issue. It's been awhile, so I don't remember what. I keep trying different roses that are thought to be good in a no spray garden and last spring I planted - Savannah and Beverly and Pope John Paul. Savannah is a Kordes - my first. It was enjoyable in it's first season. Pretty foliage and I liked the color and texture of the blooms. It didn't grow too much or produce many flowers, but I didn't expect a lot in it's first year starting off bare root from Palatine. But by the end of the season, it was suddenly showing some problem with one of the canes. Not insects, but disease. I left it alone and just hoped for the best this spring. This spring, it had some leaf buds on it, but they deteriorated as soon as they opened and while the other roses were pushing out more buds and then opening leaves, Savannah did nothing and looked worse. So I decided to cut all the canes back to the ground. And I thought that was the end of it really, but to my surprise, it sprouted new canes - about 3 of them. Right now it's about 6-8" tall and has leafed out and looks okay. Not a great start for a rose though. Beverly is another Kordes and last year it did fine and produced more flowers than Savannah and looked healthy. This year it has filled out with leaves. I usually have roses starting to open by June 1st, so, we'll see how it does this year. The foliage looked clean all season last year and so far this year too. Maybe by the end of this season I'll be able to make a better comparison....See MoreUser
