Flooring Design Dilemma

Vinyl plank flooring for home remodel, a good idea?

We are doing a home reno and were planning to do hardwood in the living/dining/hallway and kitchen areas. After doing some research and and shopping around, luxery vinyl planks are seeming to be more suited to our lifestyle. We have 3 small dogs. pros/cons on going the vinyl route? How is scratching and are they really waterproof? We have been leaning towards Torlys Everwood designer collection, how does this rate compared against other brands?

I don't know about that brand but at a flooring place I went they said do not buy these from big box stores. Armstrong and Mannington are very good. We are using them for a kitchen, dining and living room open concept remodel. Personally unless you have a super high end home I think LVP is smart , practical and looks awesome. We could barely tell difference.

Torlys is an excellent brand. If you have the budget for Torlys, you won't have a problem with the flooring looking "fake". They use some of the best manufacturing machines in the business. Go for it. You won't be disappointed.

My parents downsized for the 4th time and their latest house has LVP. It looks nice in their house and they picked a medium brown tone, so not a trendy color. Their last 2 houses had tile and houses before that had hardwood. I built last year and installed engineered wood floors through most of the house. I kept an open mind and did take a look at LVP when doing my research, but I didn't like the look and my DH hated how they sounded when he walked on large sample areas installed in the flooring showrooms. These days you are seeing the LVP being installed in higher end homes here in FL and buyers seem to accept it just fine, specially closer to the beaches. A couple of years ago I had started seeing the ceramic core floors with a wood veneer in Los Angeles, specially for mid/high end flips.

We did our whole basement a few months back in luxury vinyl tile (that's the lvt above :) ) and just love it. I think it's a no-brainer if you have dogs that will scratch up hardwood or need waterproofing (we put it through our laundry area and mudroom). On a main floor, I'd still do hardwood, because all of the other options feel fake underfoot (barefoot). But if that's not an option, the lvt is warm, soft, and has some awesome looks these days. I really think it's going to completely replace laminate pretty quickly.

@littlebug - I appricate your feedback, since I am open to others ideas. What color would you suggest? I do like the Scandinavian style, so I might be going with a lighter floor. Here are a couple of examples of brown furniture with gray walls, I find the look harmonious and pretty!

Not all laminates are created equal, and the same is true of LVP. LVP is softer on the feet but is more prone to indentations from furniture as well as sun damage (warping or fading) from windows. It's not super common, but it does happen, even with some of the mid-grade brands. We chose laminate flooring and LOVE it. I did a lot of research and the one we chose has a nearly waterproof core, meaning a puddle of water is not going to soak in and damage the floor. Not all laminates are like this though. We've had it for 3 years and it's been a dream to take care of. It's installed throughout our main floor, including the kitchen and half bath. I would not put laminate, hardwood, or LVP in a full bathroom or laundry room but that's just my opinion. I would do tile in those areas. Anyway, we're very happy with our laminate (except it was installed wrong initially and they had to redo it) and would choose it again. I decided against LVP because it can scuff, etc and we have two dogs. Our particular laminate is way more durable than the LVP we looked at (mainly Coretec) and looks brand new.

Vinyl is good for kitchens, but if you're using real wood in other parts of the house do not put any fake wood in. So look for a stone/tile vinyl as opposed to a wood look one.

don't do it. a good rule of thumb is no faux. If you don't think wood will fit your lifestyle, look in to tile (not faux wood!) that will. One I am loving lately is large format cement tile

We did LVP in bedrooms, hallways and closets because we have pets and kids. We LOVE the flooring! Putting in hardwood didn't make sense...not a super high end home so the cost vs. benefit in resale wasn't there, and I wanted something that could get spilled on and not worry about cleaning it up immediately. LVP was exactly that! It wore very well for 2+ years in that house and we'll do it again in the next house. I also liked that it felt warm and "soft" as compared to tile.
