Did you have fun outdoors today?
Comments (22)This weekend has been awesome. It's the first real gardening weekend I've managed this year! Either the weather or gigs have kept me away up til now. My parents were in town and they had a great time watching me and DH buy stuff, put in stuff, weed stuff, etc. And they have more gardening experience than us, so it was fun discussing plans with them and having them tell us that we're doing well! What we did: Weeded lots (the weeds sure loved the three weeks of rain we've had!) Pulled out grass to create a bed under my lilacs (I just stuck bulbs in last fall coz I was lazy, now I'm regretting it as I have to carefully yank grass out from around the plants--frittilaria and grape hyacinth--without yanking the plants). Have a ways to go with that bed, but made a lot of progress. DH mowed the lawn and took apart the scary riding mower and changed the fuel filter and sharpened the blades. He also pruned back lot of the small trees--especially the nasty honey locust trees with the evil pointy thorns that jump out and grab you if you go anywhere near them (I *hate* those trees. I really want to take them all out and replace them with something else but I havent managed to talk DH into it yet.) Planted out allysum, clematis, bleeding heart, hellebore, one black iris ("Before The Storm"), Nemesia, something I dont know the name of (orange petals, blue center, kindof daisy-like in look). Bought hanging baskets: terracotta million bells, purple petunia and something white and something lavender mix. Made railing planters: white petunia/red million bells/blue lobelia. Saw the first hummingbird of the year! Yay!!!! Bought Bayer's Rose and Flower spray to treat the lilies for red lily beetle infestation. I'm going to treat them until they get to full buds and then stop before they flower. I'm hoping that that way I'll get rid of the beetles before the spray would be killing bees as well. Sat on the deck swing for the first time this year! Mom hung out and identified all the birds. She's President of her local chapter of the Audabon society (in Putnam Valley NY) and had a blast. We have a LOT of birds on our property! So cool!...See MoreDid You Accomplish Today What You Thought You Would?
Comments (14)Mission(s) accomplished: -got up, took dogs out, changed bed, put sheets in washer, went to grocery store, went back home, put sheets in dryer -went to work, on morning break returned a pair of pants and bought lottery tickets -on lunch took dogs out, made two batches of apple pie filling, folded sheets -back to work, paid parking ticket on afternoon break -hair done right after work, plus eyebrows -dogs out again, grocery store AGAIN so I won't have to go on Saturday (main purpose in the morning was to pick up apples to make filling at lunch) , ran dishwasher while making two apple pies, unloaded dishwasher, did the hand dishes and cleaned up the pastry mess, took the compost out, did a couple of little things in the greenhouse -waiting to watch movie with son and his girlfriend. *Btw... I was a little frazzled and took a gulp of egg wash instead of the peach juice I meant to drink. Yuck....See MoreHave you tried this? I did, today, and like it!
Comments (23)I tried the Hellman's Olive Oil mayonnaise "dressing". It was so bad I actually called the 800 number on the package and told them. It doesn't taste of olive oil at all, but it is SWEET. If I wanted SWEET, I'd have bought the freaking Miracle Whip (which will never cross my threshold)! I understand that it is "dressing" and not mayonnaise. I didn't expect it to taste like mayo. But if I buy "Olive Oil Mayonnaise Dressing", I expect some sort of olive oil flavor, not a sugar flavor....See MoreRaw Foods/Whole Foods Kitchen? How did you plan around these needs?
Comments (6)This is my 3rd attempt at sauerkraut. First time was too scary, and I abandoned it. Second time around, I was more adventurous, and scraped the "spooge" off the edges and then tasted the 'kraut. It was SOUR, since I'd let it ferment for a long time (6 weeks or so), but good. Other people's sauerkraut tasted bland in comparison. I'm going to check this new batch at 5 days, and keep checking it every little bit after that til I find "just right". I know it takes me a while to get used to new favors, so hopefully the more you drink your lemonade, sample the cheese, etc., the more you'll like it. Have you tried store bought Kombucha? I'd love to get that kind of flavor and fizziness in our home brew. That's great you have space for a back pantry kitchen, Building for the CATS. I think this is an ideal setup, really. AK Tillery's kitchen comes to mind. Our pantry is only about 4x4ish, and has no room for a back counter. I'm thankful for what it holds, but its use is somewhat limited. The Amish around here often have a second kitchen in the basement. This is their canning area, and is nice for when they host large groups for church and fellowship. One friend used her second kitchen for juicing as part of Gerson therapy for her husband's Lyme disease (He's doing GREAT!) She was really thankful that all that prep and cleanup could happen separate from her everyday kitchen. Your rolling carts and extended counter sound super helpful, loonlakelaborcamp. I hear you on nowhere to clamp things down, we had issues with that in our old house when we'd go to use the squeezo or the apple peeler. I love the idea of the canning jars at the backsplash. I think Mamagoose has this too, right? I have my spices under my cooktop, which is pretty handy too. I just need to break down and order storage tins to contain them more neatly. It's a mess under there right now. I don't think I mind the "working kitchen look" so much as I mind A.The lack of counter space. B.When there is clutter on the counters, the kids don't clean up as well (and neither does mom, frankly ; )) It's like the stuff all blends together, and it gets more full and disorganized by the minute, like Scoby's left too long in their dark swampy tea. : )...See Moregardengal48 (PNW Z8/9)
