Why does the threshold color need to be close to the original? It does not match what's around it at all. I would look for one in Black Absolute, can be polished or honed finish.

Thank you. It is a request from my co-op. I have a ground floor lobby facing apartment in a landmark building. My contractor cut the front door without getting all the right approvals (though in his defense he thought telling the Super was sufficient); finding a matching stone might start to help smooth things over.

Unfortunately that stone could be 100 years old and no longer quarried. Trying to remove it and reuse it may be a possibility; but it will likely crack.

@ Skippack Tile & Stone - Thank you as well. 100 years is a good guess. My building was completed in 1926 and I suspect the stone goes back to then. We talked about the possibility of reusing the piece... but my contractor is pretty sure it will crack when removed. Whatever we decide will have to go through the building as the saddle faces the common area. Thanks again.

Can anyone guess what kind of stone it is? It looks to me like some form of marble -- but very much unlike anything I've ever seen (though I'm certainly no expert).

Oh, that stone goes back billions of years before that. ;-)

Just do a search for dark grey limestone. There's lots of it out there. It might be marble, (hard to say with those pics), but my guess is limestone, especially if you can see little marine critters in it.

All stone types are still quarried. You're just trying to get a good-ish match.

Alternatively:

A. He could graft the piece of door he cut off back onto your door with minimal visible effect.

B. He could install a sweep on the inside bottom of the door.

You need to check salvage/restoration places for the stone. Also, ask your building Super to check storage; you never know if they originally had some left from the project. On a somewhat similar situation in Philadelphia, we reccommended to the building owner to use a faux painting artist; but that repair was on a wall.
