What do do with puffy quilt blocks.

A friend of mine, who is a non-quilter, hand stitched a queen size, wedding ring quilt about 25 or 30 years ago but never finished it. I volunteered to help her get it machine quilted and finished. The problem is that some of the blocks, which are supposed to be hexagons, are kind of puffy and don't lie flat. I'm trying to figure out what to do with them so the long arm quilter doesn't have too hard a time. I tried ironing a fold into one of these blocks and then using a little fusible to keep the fold flat. I'm at a loss as to what else to do. Any and all suggestions are welcome. About 85% of the blocks are just fine; it's just that dozen or so that are a real problem. Help.
