antique dresser/sideboard as vanity: do they hold up over time?
Comments (5)It really depends on what you mean by "sticker shock" and, as tuesday_ said, whether you intend to use the wooden top or to replace that top with a more bathroom-friendly top. If you're replacing the top, it's not going to be inexpensive. I wanted the look of what you're talking about but the practicality of a real vanity with real storage. (Keep in mind that you'll like have to modify the drawers, etc. and may lose a lot of storage with a dresser, etc. Buffets/sideboards may be better if they have doors.) Here's what I went with. It was about $1K with a top and sinks and pre-drilled for faucets. But I bashed off the top with a hammer so that I could replace it with a top that I wanted and with the white, squarer sinks I wanted (that cost me an extra $200 for the sinks and $850 for the top/backsplash with installation). (There was nothing wrong with the top that came with it (it was polished, cream-colored, vein-cut travertine), but it didn't match my remodel.) Anyhow, it'll give you an idea of what you can get for the money. It's solid wood, very heavy, and has a ton of storage. It's made by Silkroad Exclusive, and you can get it (and ones like it) on the Internet (including ebay). You may also want to check out Premier Vanities (an online retailer), which has a lot of furniture-base look-alikes. Here's a couple of pictures of what I used that'll also show you how much storage it has:...See Moreputting granite top on antique sideboard
Comments (19)We put a granite top on top of an old sideboard. Our sideboard wasn't as ornate as yours, and I wondered if you were still planning to use that hutch type piece on top? It does look from your photo like it would feel nicer in a dining room, but sometimes it's a 'use it here or else!' kind of thing. I know, I've been there. Our granite guy who was doing our kitchen counters at the same time, cut the top along the same curving lines as our sideboard, cut an opening for the sink in both the granite and the top of the sideboard. Of course, you wouldn't need that. He glued it on and I love the way it came out. I'm assuming you just want the piece intact, not that you plan to use it again ~sans the granite~ for something else? Comments (23)Absolutely. You also have a lot of options about how to decorate it. A large mirror, picture, or collection above. The surface can hold a collection or seasonal vignettes...especially since we are getting close to Thanksgiving and Christmas. Or one large piece, maybe pottery with branches. So many possibilities! My grandma gave me the buffet from her old dining set that I used in the LR for our TV. It's in the dining room, now, waiting for harvest inspiration from me. As long as you have room for them, they can be quite versatile. The defeated army under the side table made me laugh! I have the same thing in my living room :D...See MoreWhat do you think of this antique mirror for my sideboard?
Comments (20)jejvtr: What a pretty and unusual mirror. I would snap that up in a heartbeat if that were on Craigslist! (And, yours too, Red!) You are right the sideboards are quite similar. I have just fallen in love with antique mahagony. New mahogany just does not have that same vibrant look. Your mirror will look lovely raised up. What are the dimensions of your mirror? I think I'm going to buy the second one on Craigslist that I pictured on Monday that is 42x24. The gilt is brighter and is on a smaller scale than the first--plus original glass. I spoke to the lady and she seems in no hurry to sell which is great for me as we have guests this weekend and that is the soonest I can get there. If I get this one, this will make the second item I've bought in my home from children helping their aged parents downsize their homes. Kind of sad, at the same, time, I feel these people must've loved these items and would like to see them appreciated again....See Morechas045
