What's the ideal distance from edge of cooktop to edge of counter?

Is there an ideal distance from the edge of the counter to the cooktop?

Assume there is an infinite amount of counter space behind the cooktop so you can go as far away from the edge as you want but that you can't go closer than 2.5" from the edge due to cooktop specs.

Frameless, induction cooktop so there are no knobs or anything like that to account for.

Aren’t there instructions that come with the cooktop?

Cooktop specs give you a minimum distance from the edge of the counter in front, and from the wall in back. But as long as you don't violate those minimums you can put the cooktop wherever you like.

When I look at images of induction cooktops I see some that look like they are right at that ~2" setback and some that are considerably more. Trying to figure out if there are pros/cons to how far back you put it. I have room to spare behind the cooktop so I'm not limited to 2.5" if more is preferable.

Now I see the advantage of an apron style sink: your arms don't have to reach as far forward. This is significant when the sink is deep. I think that with an engineered quartz countertop it will be possible to make the distance to the front of the sink much smaller. Does anyone know, from experience, how much is too little ? I would put a lot of steel support under the thin strip of counter in front of the sink.

I hope we never sell the place, or at least not for 20 years until after the kids are all gone, but of course you never know! I took some pictures today, here's the sink cabinet showing both the bumpouts (they are similar to the example that kompy found): And here's a closeup of one of them: I think they add interest to the cabinet, and I like them, plus the pattern matches other features in the house. I didn't think about pullouts, that could have been nice to have. Although I think we aren't losing any cabinet space - I'll have to look more closely, but I think they are just part of the front of the cabinet, so the interior still fills the space behind them. We also have the same thing around the range on the other wall. Hopefully the fabricators will do a good job on the angles!

You can have laminate countertops made in any thickness you like -- provided you don't go so thin as co compromise the structure. In the 60s 1" thick laminate counterops was the rage for a while. We still replace a lot of it. The 1-1/2" standard laminate thickness serves no particular purpose. It just happens to be what you get when you glue two 3/4" board together. We commonly have tops made 1-1/4" thick to match Formica's ideal edge thickness. Other edge fabricators will go as thin a 1-1/8" which is about 2 cm. This helps the illusion that the laminate is stone since stone tops are typically 2 cm.

If you getting Absolute Black granite, then I have two pieces of advice: - do not have it sealed. Real AB granite is so dense that sealant will just sit on top, and create a haze. Many complaints about AB arise from the installer sealing the granite--because they seal all granite counters as a matter of course after they've installed them. Then the granite shows hazy and streaky, and the homeowner thinks it's the granite's fault. They will then have to remove the sealant, which can be done, but is a PITA, and could have been avoided by not sealing the AB in the first place. - make sure it is real AB granite. Unfortunately, when AB became popular, other similar stones came on the market to jump on the bandwagon. Some of this "AB" isn't really black, but more of a dark gray, and then dyed black to look like AB. The imitation AB will etch, and leave gray spots as certain liquids come in contact with it that remove the dye. To be sure your AB is real, put a little lemon juice on a sample from where you are getting your AB. If the AB is not real, the sample will show gray where the lemon juice was. Real AB is so dense it would not be affected by lemon juice.

How easy and comfortable it is for you to maneuver pots could be something to consider. You can make a cardboard template with the burner circles marked and tape it to a section of a counter. The other thing is the integrity of the counter material along the front edge. If the cutout is made before transport reinforcement like fiberglass or aluminum rods may be installed.

You want sink and appliance rails as thin as possible. Pull each as far forward as you can.

These have made that obsolete. Once the tops are on the cabinets, the cabinets provide all the strength in tension the stone lacks.
