5 years agoMy biggest disappointment was with Picasso's Intrigue. It performed well the first year I had it and quickly multiplied to four fans. Year two it was back down to two fans. This year it had two tiny fans emerge that were smaller than any of the seedlings I started in February. I dug it up and it had hardly any roots. I suspect grubs or burrowing varmints got it. I put it in a raised bed where it gets part shade and it got crown rot. I potted it and applied triage but it's dying. I probably won't replace it since all of my "sheltered space" is filled.

Comments (21)Elizabeth, you should definitely assume you're right. I'm not good at identifying sans at all. If you say it's s. t. hahnii jade, then I'd be inclined to go with that. :-) Hydroculture is growing plants using hydroton (clay pellets) and water. The roots are not submerged in water though. At the bottom of a container there's about an inch of the hydroton and water. Then you place the roots above that and fill in the space with hydroton to anchor the plant. The hydroton wicks the appropriate amount of water to the roots. From what I understand, you can use aquarium gravel and perlite instead of hydroton. I'm still learning and reading about it. Apparently sans are some of the easiest plants to convert to hydroculture. I read that it's easier if you first allow the plant to establish water roots by setting them in water. Comments (31)You are always going to have folks who THINK new is better. It's the way they are wired. A good many of those folks are in the real estate profession. They are looking at things from the point of the bottomline. Not always the best place to measure success from. I'd start by finding a different contractor. When it comes to contractors you generally have two types the one ones who like new because it's fast and easy and it fattens their wallets with a quick turn around and the the ones who are masters and will work with you to save what they can. Generally speaking the latter is more costly but they also have the advantage of being better problem solvers and better at their craft. There seems to be a point of pride they carry which the gut and build guys just don't have. That house has character. It has a good location and if you can afford to fix it up so it maintains that charm then I'd go for it. You fell in love with it as it is. Fixed up and maintained somebody else in the future will love it just as much if not more. My biggest rule in home ownership is go with your gut. Comments (14)One problem is that glass cutters can handle straight cuts, but curves are iffy. If your table top is round or oval, it is tough to cut, but a rectangular piece is easier to do. I also wondering if codes require the table top to be "safety' glass, e.g., glass that is internally stressed to cause it to fragment into many small pieces if struck. This stuff may be very difficult to cut in the usual way. If Walmart can not supply you with a replacement top, then make a replacement top or get a whole new table. If you make a top out of plywood, be sure to use outdoor or better yet, marine rated plywood. The other stuff will de-lainate in a short time. Finish the plywood with an outdoor rated finish. A marine varnish is good, but ti takes a longer time to dry than other finishes. Whichever finish you use, be sure to soak the edges where the end grain shows. The edge will require much more finishing liquid than large flat surface. Continue to brush the finish onto the edges as it soaks in. Stop the application when the rate of wicking slows, and lastly, apply to the large flat surface.
