Exterior Paint Color (Neutrals) Help for a small Stucco House

We are currently working on picking out paint colors for our small stucco cottagey house. It has a mid to darker gray roof. Its currently stuccoed a light yellowish color that we hate. We want to go a bit darker, in the tan/greige/neutral categories to help it stand out yet work with the natural surroundings. It needs to have more of a presence, as it sits back on the lot with a wooded back and similar light colored houses to the left and right of us. We need to work with the white trim and white board and batten that will be on the rear entrance addition as well as the gray/tan colored stonework. Typical grays tend to look too cold so we've been avoiding that after seeing a few test colors on the house (SW Dorian Gray.)

We had painted a couple sides of the garage a color we tested on the house exterior (SW Analytical Gray) and it ended up much too light and close to what we had, so we are back to the drawing board.

I could really use more ideas on specific paint colors, maybe Sherwin Williams or Benjamin Moore, or something else available in Canada. :)

Why can't the addition be the same color as the stucco?

Your house can handle a bolder color--why not choose one of your favorite cheerful colors? Everyone seems to be choosing gray/greige/ blah blah. Our house is blue with a coral door and it makes me happy 3 years after painting it. It's just paint - I'd do something fun.

Tan/greige/neutral categories are not going to help it stand out. I agree there are some blues that look good with nature and they would work well with your dark gray roof and white trim. I also like a cottage red on bungalows like your house.

What an adorable house! I grew up with those white frame houses with black trim, & to me, they always looked stark & maybe institutional. & this is what I thought when I was too young to know those words! I think with a pure white background, you can use pure clear colors like red, which is a great "country" color for houses, or deep cool pastels, like the gray you have now or maybe a deeper gray. Hunter green is also a traditional color for farmhouse trim, & it would play off the white white beautifully. I'm a fan of Behr paints from Home Depot, but a lot depends on your climate; we have lots of summer & you may have lots of winter or lots of salt spray. This forum's participants have a vast pool of experience a great willingness to share, so I'm sure somebody will give you expert advice on brand & type.

IMO san, tan and beige are all just shades of beige. You already have that so why not just do the garage door the same and do your aqua door

I think you should consider addressing the weak entrance to your home. Seems as though it requires a larger porch.

yes we will be addressing that in the future....right now we are focusing on paint. :) One step at a time. The old front porch will be coming down likely next year.

Green, Blue and Red are all out I'm afraid. The house was sage green when it was first built and it blended it with the surroundings too much as we are literally backed up against the wood with wilderness out our back door. My husband had it stuccoed then years ago and it came out an pale yellow color which wasn't what he thought he was getting. Now it just blends in with the cream color houses all around us. We need to not stick out like a sore thumb in this older neighborhood we are in, but yet give the house some visual clarity so its more easily noticed and stands apart from the neighbors with a darker tone. Red doesn't go at all with what we've done on the inside and isn't our thing, and while I love blue and use a lot of it inside with teals and aquas, we want the exterior to be a stronger neutral...maybe a mid to darker tone tan. I don't have access in this little town to SW or BM paint chips so am hoping to get some ideas for when we get into the city later this week and I will grab some paint chips then.

Here's a Sherwin Williams palette that will give you a favorite color on your front door. Body: Classic French Gray, Trim: Extra White, Door: Holiday Turquoise.

This color is kind of what we were thinking, and we have similar roof shingle, wood and stone colors on our house. Love how the green stands out against the tan.

That's the color I was thinking for my home as well in San Diego. i also am having a difficult time and don't want to buy 10-20 sample cans of paint. :) Did you identify the color?
