range hood, cfms, muas -- what would you do?
Comments (3)Have you asked your GC or HVAC sub if MUA is actually enforced in your area? I ask because my municipality's code has the same requirement, but my former GC, who had never heard of the code despite installing many high CFM hoods, checked with our city's inspection office and was told that they have never enforced the MUA code. That doesn't mean that one should ignore the possible need for MUA, especially in a new build where homes are much tighter than older ones. I installed a 42" 600cfm hood over a 6 burner, 36" CC rangetop despite the usual btu-cfm formula showing that I needed a more powerful blower because I found a great deal on a gorgeous custom hood with blower already installed. I've been cooking up a storm with rangetop and hood for more than nine months now and have done fine. We entertain often; I cook daily from scratch; and I often use a few burners or more at once. Now, its not been long enough to notice any possible greasy build up on walls and cabs if that was going to happen. But on a daily basis, I'm doing well with fewer cfms than suggested. The fact that my hood is 6" wider than the cooking surface, as often recommended here, probably helps. If your hood will also be wider, I think you could get by with a 400cfm hood. I'm only a lay person, not a venting guru. :)...See MoreWhat do you think of Kobe Range hood insert?
Comments (2)Kobe, from what I gather, makes good quality hoods that perform well for the price. I found them quieter in a subjective way than similarly priced models from Broan, Best by Broan, Zephyr, and Elica. I only listened on "high" as I don't expect to be cooking and running one on the "low" settings (which I think are there mainly for marketing purposes -- shoot I can get 0 sones at 0 CFM). The baffle filters are, in my opinion, a plus. I'd consider a 42" hood over a 36" range, if your cabinetry permits. You might want to consider Prestige and Independent with a 600 CFM blower if your budget permits. (I'm assuming that you don't have a cooktop grill in your configuration, which probably should have a 1200 CFM blower.)...See MoreHow Do You Clean Your Outside Range Hood Vent?
Comments (6)In my experience with my 1400 cfm Tradewind liner with baffles there would be no need to ever "clean" any parts except the baffles. My rationale for this is the following. Once a week ( more often if it warrants it ) I remove the baffles and clean them. depending on how much stir fry and deep fat frying we have done they are quite greasy, sometimes very very oily and one or two times , before I realized that they capture everything they were dripping droplets of golden oil. I also wipe down the surrounding area and there is never anything on this area at all. I have pushed the damper up and tried to wipe in that area and felt up there with my hand and there is nothing up there either. The process of using your hood correctly should remove any need for cleaning other than the baffles. The hood should be turned on at least 5 min. before you begin cooking and remain on at least that long at the end. This insures that all grease products are trapped on the baffles and then the remaining products, steam/heat/odors are removed to the outdoors. I hope this helps you with your decision. The baffles or your mesh should be very dirty on a regular basis, depending on your cooking style. Also there should not be any grease on any part of your surrounding area in the kitchen. If there is then the vent is not working correctly or you can adjust your use of it. Good Luck c...See MoreIf you have a range hood with 400CFM+, do you have a make up air kit?
Comments (8)Hello with an update: So, I contacted many HVAC companies and it was a hassle to even get them to understand what I wanted. Most have never even heard about Make up air... The company that serves our HVAC unit sent someone and gave us an estimate of $1500.00 to do the make up air through the HVAC system (but they were upfront they had never done this before and actually took a while to do their research into Fairfax code, etc..). I had another HVAC contractor give me the same quote. I kept looking (with no luck) and then I had the idea of calling Bray and Scarf (sp?) to ask them for a recommendation, since I am pretty sure they sell this kind of hood. They told me to call R.A. Dobson (heating, ac and plumbing) and they came over. They wanted to do something simpler, without involving the HVAC unit. George (their guy) said he didn't think the HVAC could support and work efficiently with the addition of the make up air damper. He gave me a quote of $1400.00. At this point, I have decided to just have my contractor do the simple version of it, without involving the HVAC unit and he is charging me $1200.00. I went with him because his price includes everything, including fixing the walls, the roof part, etc. The other companies don't fix dry wall or deal with the roof part. But yeah, if I had known it was so complicated and expensive would have gone down to a 300 CFM hood....See MoreFilipe Custom Woodwork
