Comments (16)Cranes, when migrating, ride the wind in a novel way. They fly and glide loosing altitude until they find a thermal, and then they do a tight circle trying to stay in the thermal. If the thermal is small in diameter, they will circle and make multiple passes through the thermal. In this way, cranes use a thermal as an elevator to gain altitude. After gaining altitude, the flock will continue on their migration path until encountering another thermal to begin the process again. If you should be privileged to observe this behavior on a sunny fall day, it will appear that the cranes are playing or performing a mating ritual, but this is not the case. They are riding nature's elevator. Its a sight to see the entire flock all trying to ride the elevator at once. It appears chaotic with 10 or more birds wheeling in the air while dodging each other. Comments (13)I don't get the days of the week part - but, it's Friday, so, I can post a train picture, right? More specifically, taken from a train. This is the view of the upper bay from Amtrak and MARC commuter trains crossing from Harford to Cecil County in Maryland. The highest hills of the Elk Neck Peninsula in the distance are only 264' high...but I'm pretty sure that's the highest elevation you can see on deep* coastal waters of the eastern US, between the NYC area and the volcanic islands of the Caribbean. Correct me if I'm wrong! The town to the right is Havre de Grace. Rather than accept the local butchering of french, I just call it by its nick name from the olden days of bookies and gangsters: The Graw. * Panamax class vessels can cross the Delmarva Peninsula on the other side that land mass...See MoreI'll show you mine/you show me yours - Fr 10/14/22

8 years agoAlmost time for them to bloom again. Spring and autumn. Love the pure white, but I think I'll go for the pink, smaller blooms. Just seem cheerier.
8 years agoA local farmer has a blog on Facebook which has over 300,000 followers. He explains about dairy farming, and being a farmer in general.
He tries to dispel all the myths and rumours from Peta, etc how cows are treated inhumanely, etc.
This is a pic he posted this morning. His cow, Satin, looks like she has the wings of an angel
