How do I improve entry way and curb appeal of the front yard?
Comments (10)In your introductory statement, you say that you're interested in changing "... the front deck into a more pleasant entry way." Let's compare the existing deck to two concepts. Presently, it seems sized such that it could accommodate 3 or 4 people entering. In my concept I haven't the size of the deck much. I've widened it just a little, mainly to allow for building wider steps ... maybe twice as wide as the current steps. It might accommodate an additional person or two. In your concept drawing, you've changed the deck from merely an entrance, to one sized for family gatherings -- lounging, dining, BBQs, etc. Is that how you intend to use the deck? If it is merely an entrance, it does not make sense to overwhelm the space with a lounging and entertaining deck sized for a family ... unless you are receiving visitors in groups numbering into the teens. First, figure out its purpose and base its size on that. Then work out its configuration. Whether its a wood deck or masonry porch structure doesn't matter to its function, as either can do the job. The materials will have more to do with durability, maintenance and the visual, artistic impression that you are trying to make. In general, I think people value masonry porches as the superior ones, b ut it isn't necessarily always that way....See MoreHouse has weird asymmetrical windows -- how can I improve curb appeal?
Comments (38)There really is nothing farmhouse about your home's style. The roof is Spanish. From the front, the board and batten and casement windows are contemporary. From the side, the house looks like it was a Garrison Colonial with the overhang filled in at one point. The solid wall makes it feel more contemporary. The extra trim around the windows look like they were added on at some point. This is a good example of an authentic, typical farmhouse. If you were to remove the front porch, it would be a typical Colonial with an addition on the back. This shows the overhang of a Garrison Colonial. Here, the entrance is in the middle rather than on the side. If you're curious as to what your house was look like when it was originally built, perhaps you can get a copy of the plans from the office that issues building permits in your county. You would more than likely be able to find elevation drawings that shows how the house was meant to look....See MoreHow can I improve the safety of entrance and stairs?
Comments (10)Wow, those do look like a hazard! I would consider painting the riser or the tread but it depends on the overall plan for the house. Did you want to repaint or restain the whole house? If this is a long process, then adding contrasting strips to the edges of the steps would help in the meantime. I also suspect you need more lighting as the entrance appears quite dark, even in the daytime. So it's either lightening via color or lighting via more illumination (maybe even both). Do the lights in the risers work? Take a picture that shows the entire front of the home for curb appeal suggestions. Describe what it is that you don't like. Your house color immediately made me think of light green plants as an accent. Maybe pots with Bells of Ireland, sweet potato vine......See MoreHow would you paint our exterior - and improve the look?
Comments (11)I don't think I'd paint your brick either. With its natural color, it fits so well onto your treed lot, like it has always been there. Understated and classy. I would paint the little bit of siding one of the colors in the brick - there's no reason for it to stand out, looks a little odd to me. I'm not seeing a lot of foot room at the front door for impressive pots. Is there a space over by the birdbath? Or, in Spring, maybe a hanging basket to the left as you approach the front door, that looks like a substantial overhang from which to hang a planter (could be wrong from the angle of the photo regarding how substantial that overhang. Outside of entrance at house front.) Could you put one large impressive pot into the bed to the right of the door, I can't quite see what is planted there. I could envision a sculpture of sorts mounted on the inside wall next to the door. Maybe in copper, or brass (could be found at a plant nursery). I have one at my slate entrance that is three pears with leaves, 26 wide by 18 tall How do you feel about teals, is that a color that makes you happy? My first thought is something like Ben Moore Teal Ocean or Naples Blue for that door....See More- 5 years ago
