Kitchen Cabinet Color: White or Alder Antique Brown?
Comments (20)Rhome is right. The difference between a white kitchen and an all wood room is huge. Will your new kitchen have a lot of natural light? I'm biased because I know I couldn't live in a kitchen that was all stained wood, but a stained kitchen with wood floors in a space without a lot of natural light reads dark and heavy. Sometimes that can feel cozy and comforting to people. Thinking about Rhome's questions, the Sweeby test, and looking at kitchens online will hopefully help to narrow in on the feeling you want to create. As to the glazing, this has been discussed often. You could search around here to read some of the discussions. A lot of people feel that a glaze on white or creamy cabs is dated, and that it makes the cabs look dirty. I feel like getting out a sponge and scrubbing cabs like that, myself. I painted the dark 70's wood cabs in my house 12 years ago and I glazed and crackled them. (hey, it was the 90's!). Soon after, I thought they looked dirty and wished I hadn't done it. Tastes change. You could always have them installed without glaze and have it done later if you really miss it. Finding a direction can take some time. Good luck!...See Morepics Cream cabs, soapstne, marble, alder island - almost done
Comments (37)I can't tell you how much fun this board is because you're all just as enthusiastic about kitchens as I am! Madaboutkitchens... dimensions to come and the finish is just 'cream' from Mouser Cabinetry. Thank you Martha and I'm so excited to find another 'Gaga for Aga person'!! We have to talk via email - I'm considering ordering the stackable aga stainless aga pots - do you have them? Also how necessary is that sleeve potholder? Yes it was a lot of work - I didn't wield the hammer but spent months researching and traveling around. I discovered you have to really be your own project manager to get what you want. Luckily my KD was willing to mentally move away from the 'usual' and follow my vision too. My husband and I did our own painting - and as you can see from photos we have patchwork to do still. We're also going to tackle the laundry room next by ourselves. and Martha - link me to your kitchen pics! Also I'd like to recommend some software that was INTEGRAL during design. It's free! Evernote.com You can download it to your computer - clip items, and put them in a public space for your KD to see. It was a huge help during design phase. (no affiliation just love the product!)...See MoreNew alder cabinets installed - Is this normal for alder?
Comments (43)Mayflowers - I dont know about the stain or the finish. So here is an update. I discovered from our designer that these are not custom made cabinets. They were made by Mid Continent Cabinets. Apparently this factory is not able to, or doesnt want to, pick out less knotty pieces of alder to remake the doors. We could ask them to remake x doors and drawers and we might get x drawers and doors that are worse, or better, or the same. This seems like very odd quality control to me, and a huge waste of everyone's time. Our designer spoke with someone at Mid Continent who said that alder is a poor man's cherry, and that we should be able to replace all the doors with cherry. She left us a sample and indeed it looks like it might work, But Mid Continent quoted us $2600 to remake all drawers and doors in cherry. Our designer said she would pay half "because she and I are both guilty of miscommunication during the initial cabinet design", even though I gave her the exact bill of materials that we had chosen a year ago with another company. As well as shown her pictures of the cabinets. Whatever. So my question to you guys - Ive heard that cherry darkens with time. Would you take the chance getting cherry drawers and doors on an alder frame? The colors match very well right now. Personally, I kind of want our designer to reimburse us some $$$ and use it to get custom doors and drawers from a builder who actually cares about quality and can hand pick the alder. And then she can wash her hands of this mess and we can take responsibility of the final product rather then being at the mercy of unhelpful companies like Mid Continent....See MoreFront door color for our rustic beach cabin?
Comments (58)I love your beach cabin and location! Your door color is great, too, and you don't need to do anything different about your cushion or pillows. ETA I'm going hunting at a flea market in a few hours for a rustic coffee table for my future front porch - something like yours would be a great idea. Friends of mine are giving me a couple of rocking chairs that they'd gotten for free, but which don't work at their place....See MoreMichelle Gray
