Where to end tile backsplash by window/peninsula

We're putting some sort of subway tile between upper and lower cabinets to the left of the windows and running them under the window too. We'll also have the tile backsplash on the other wall with the hood and upper/lower cabinets. Where should the tiles end on the window side? At the right side of the window? Continued to the peninsula cabinet? How high do they go if we continue past the window? The wall there was wired for a television but we may do a picture or floating shelves instead. Thanks!

The situations are always tough. I usually like it when the backsplash stops under the upper cabinets, but since you don't have any on that right side, I am not sure what to tell you. Would you consider some open shelving to balance out the uppers? And give you a spot to stop backsplash? That might look good and would be on trend! Otherwise, perhaps you do underneath the upper cabinets and then go under the window and stop at the end of the window...???

move the switches if you have to (see last picture) or do a multi 4-way box.

go all the way up to the ceiling, over the window, and stop where the peninsula cabinet ends, or take it all the way out to the countertop. if you do that, take it all the way up and stop w/the door border. you can choose to stop at counter height(over to the door trim) or take it all the way to the floor.

too me, it looks like you ran out of tile if you stop half way up the window (you don't have the much to do above it anyway) or if you stop under the first shelf. white subway is cheap. buy more and do the entire thing.

Your tile looks great. If it was my kitchen I would not tile above the window. If you could replace that can light above the sink with some type of slightly blingy rectangular or oval semi flush mount light that might look nice. Here are just a few random ones I found (sorry if the pictures are too big). I'm sure other GWers could come up with more options If you didn't want to do a light fixture some horizontal art work piece could be put in the space.

Beth H. : Thank you for your suggestions & photos. I will ask our tile guy if they'd be able to do some kind of casing for us around the window. I wish our kitchen window had either a straight rectangle on top or a real arch like the photos you posted. The top window is tricky for me to conceptualize what it would look like without molding. I thought about encasing the whole window with two vertical pieces on the left and right side but the middle piece that separates the top window from the bottom window would be strangely thick. At this point it may be easier to just bring the tile to the red line and add a roman shade over the top of the bottom window but I'm not 100% sure yet. As for the tile, we are doing the plain subway tile pattern. I thought about herringbone for the backsplash but my husband and I love the classic look. We are weird with patterns and not gutsy enough to try anything bold lol. Our kitchen has a lot of white in it and we went with honey/light cinnamon colored floors to keep it very neutral. I change color schemes at least once every two months so it made sense to keep it very neutral for us.

if the window lines up with the end of the counter, go just to the end of the counter. but are you going with tile all the way up to the ceiling? maybe you can attach a photo from further back so we can see the full wall? if you are going up to the ceiling, i would want to see the photo from further back to see what would be best.

That IS a little awkward. I'd look for very small molding trim pieces, paintable to match cabinets and sill, to go on that edge from the sill around the corner into the cabinet. Something like a L in profile that could cover the edges. If you have the chance to get it redone, have it end a few inches away from the window (like as far as the stool comes out to the side) and use a Schluter type of edging. At least caulk the edges with paintable caulk and ignore it. The big picture looks good! It'll only bother you when you're at the sink. :)
