Master Bathroom Not So Master

We have a huge master bedroom (15x18 to be exact), but our master bathroom is far from a master. Right now it’s just me and my husband. Because of its size (and also because he’s a mess), the master belongs to me, and he uses the other bathroom across the hall. His bathroom recently has been having plumbing issues and his tub cracked that a patch wouldn’t fix, so he’s been slowly trying to fix the damages which has resulted in him moving into my bathroom. What was supposed to be a weekend fix project has turned into almost a month now mostly because of work schedules and not having the time to fix the repairs.
Nothing tests a marriage like sharing a bathroom lol. His latest remarks when we both had to be at work at the same time and were both in the bathroom together, he finally said that when we have a child, there’s no way we can share the bathroom together.
I rarely use my garden tub shower enclosure because it’s not really a true garden tub and more like the shape of an 8 which makes it uncomfortable. I’d rather rip it out and do a walk in shower. My vanity is 42” and I doubt it can go any wider to make for a double sink. The bathroom is like 6x9.
I’m trying to think of a new look for this bathroom and figure out how I can enlarge it if that’s even possible. I can’t tell if that bump out near my shower is load bearing or not. What’s behind the door is a pantry which we rarely use other then towels and supplies. Behind the bump out is our loft.
Beyond ready for the hubs to move out so I can have my space back.

I wish you the best finding the perfect paint for your house....I played it safe also when building 6 yrs. ago and went with Ivorie thru out the downstairs public rooms and bedroom bath. Later changed the DR to restrained gold and the bedroom to mannered gold. then just this past Oct. changed the LR to raspberry red. I think you get more comfortable in your home the longer you are there and are willing to take more risks. Now I wish I had painted Mannered gold in the FR which is a 22 ft. ceiling room...ha! The Ivorie is staying for now until DH decides to hire a painter....LOL! But go for it if you are building....once blinds are up, furniture is in , pictures and art are hung.....the paint colors tone down. I especially love the mannered gold. It made the tones in our bedroom furniture seem much richer. I left the bathroom Ivorie since gold isn't my color in clothing shades and was afraid it might make us look sallow or jaundiced in the bathroom. We had thought of wallpapering it buy life gets in the way sometimes and projects get put on hold. But the deeper shades on that paint strip, restrained gold & mannered gold are very pretty colors. Comments (19)olychick, thank you for taking a look. :) I'm relieved to hear you think a white shower pan is best. I am heading out now to find porcelain marble look tiles for the shower walls to pick up the gray as you suggested. I want a shiny finish to the walls. Tell me if you think that's a misstep. I am avoiding marble as I have a marble topped vanity now that is pock marked with etchings. As far as seeing myself in the vanity, yes, I think I will be able to do so. I was planning on a black framed mirror spanning the vanity. My current vanity is 32 1/4" high (as will be the new vanity) and when seated on my vanity stool my reflection is seen up to my chest. The only issue currently is that my knees are pressed against drawers. I failed to mention that I was thinking of using absolute black granite for the vanity top for two reasons: one being cost and the other being to avoid etching. Will doing so deviate too much from my inspiration? Comments (2)We started with aubergine color in master bath We changed it for two reasons a) we were able to find a perfect remnant countertop -at the last moment-for the vanity, that was marble with lots of veining (soft grays,rusty red, gold, and a tiny bit of black even) that made me re think the wall color..the marble became too prominent and I wanted to keep it that way rather than take away from it b) the aubergine looked totally different in the bath area under new LEDs they installed, so I knew that I as much as I like it in daytime, it will be something else at night. If not the marble I'd play with the light though, try to make it work But I loved that aubergine so much(it's DD's room's aubergine) that we didn't repaint the enclosed restroom area, and painted master closet with it too-I was unable to say good bye to it, lol For reference: floors are dark varied terracotta, vanity is teak, shower floor is gray mosaic, other tile(tub and shower) is very warm gray as well. If you know enough elements that are staying-I wouldn't call thinking of color exactly "backward thinking"..you're developing your concept. Might work very well; or if not-you'll tweak it accordingly I wouldn't put slate next to white beadboard..why I don't know lol..maybe if I saw illustrations when natural dark stone plus white beadboard work well I'd reconsider, but my instinct says "no" at this point. We already inherited slate covered fireplace plus traditional white mantel..it looked very out of place Again I'm ready to see examples when such pairing work well Otherwise , in terms of strictly colors, yes, grays work amazing with purples. (The reason I have a fair share of very warm grays-besides me loving very warm grays-is because I love so many purples lol) One needs to mind shades though, but it's inevitable with every combo. So much depends on your light too. (I considered patterned flooring at some point too. Comments (9)You are describing my master suite. My shower head is fairly close to the door to the closet, and I must walk through the master bathroom to get to the master closet. Many of the houses in my neighborhood are like this. I don't think its a problem as long as you have a fully enclosed shower. (By "fully" I mean it has a door, and walls on all 4 sides of the shower -- I'm not talking about the shower being completely enclosed on the top. In other words water can theoretically splash out the top of my shower, and onto the carpet in the closet, but in practice it doesn't since the shower walls are quite tall (over 6 feet, I believe). The shower walls are pretty good at keeping water in. This photo is fairly like my master shower. The shower head would be on the left wall inside the shower in the pic above. The door to the master closet would be just outside the shower on the left side of the pic, at a 90 degree angle to the shower door (the master bedroom closet door is on the same plane as the wall that the shower head is on.) 5 years agoA nice master bathroom is a good investment.
Get 2 GC to get estimates. They'll help you determine which walls can be expanded or not.
Then post a floor plan with notes of what is feasible, so Houzzers can help.
Ask GC where recessed storage is possible. Avoid plumbing, electrical, HVAC obstructions in walls.

Where the doors are I struggled with getting them to look right, but you can see from the photo just how much space there is between the two doors. The door near the towel bar is a storage closet that is about 2’3” wide and 1’ 10” long and has wire shelving all the way up. Behind the cabinet is my master closet. The 6’10” you see beside the closet door is from the edge of the frame to the back wall. The electrical is only on the 3’ wall beside the entry door and then above the vanity is another electrical wiring for the vanity light. And it’s hard to read the measurements for the L shaped wall near the tub and toilet but it’s 9” near the shower head wall and then the wall near the toilet is 11”. Measuring from the back wall near the toilet to the opposite wall was 6'.

Can also put doors with frame over with mirrors if you like.

5 years agoI just realized I made an error in my measurements sketch up near the shower. I should have know that bump out wall near the 4’9” wall looked too tiny when I sketched in online.
