Should I paint this wood paneling?
Comments (14)I can't tell from the photo but if that is good quality paneling original to the house I would leave it alone and let the buyer decide what to do with it. When you show the house maybe put white wicker furniture in the solarium room with some bright colors for accents. If that is cheapy paneling from the '70s, can you remove it without doing damage to the walls? Be careful with this one though......Sometimes paneling was put up to cover water damage or to cover wallpaper. Ask you real estate agent about removing the dry bar. In some neighborhoods a rec room with a dry bar is a plus. Personally I would remove it. Or let buyers know you are willing to take it with you or leave it for them so they don't assume they are stuck with it and the task of hauling it out if they don't want it....See MoreShould I paint real wood paneling?
Comments (16)Paint it! I painted over 40 yr old yellow pine in a SW cream color (can't recall the color sorry) and it had a cottage look and was beautiful, didn't reget it at all. Agreed, the valances look a bit outdated, I would remove them. Love your plantation blinds, they're a keeper!...See Morepainting a family room that has real wood paneling
Comments (10)It's a tough call whether or not to paint real wood paneling. I've seen beautiful paint transformations but painting will cover the wood grain. You may be able to whitewash it, in order to preserve the grain, but I've only seen that on vertical board paneling not 1980's large panels. I can't tell you how the outcome would look. Here's a blog post where they completely painted their paneling: https://www.junquecottage.com/2016/11/05/paint-natural-wood-paneling-using-behr-paint/...See MoreShould I paint wood paneling?
Comments (10)For the purpose of selling my rule is to spend as little as possible and make the home appear well maintained. Rule of thumb is that you will recoup 50% of renovation costs when you sell. The other 50% is gifted to the new owner. In this case the small picture of paneling that you are showing shows signs of wear and tear. Choices are: Painting Re staining Covering Removing I would not just leave it as is. It makes it look like the home was not well maintained and you didn't care. My first choice would be to pull it off and patch and repair the wall, then repaint the entire room. I understand you feel this is too much work, so scratch that idea. Sanding and re-staining will not improve the issues with you feeling that the room is dark and clashes with the furniture you own, so scratch that idea. Painting this will show the groves and grain pattern - may not be a completely attractive look. Filling in the grooves, covering with wall liner and then painting may be your best option....See MoreAnglophilia
