Comments (10)I used to have a rice cooker, just a cheapo one, and it cooked it just fine. It was a Salton. I got rid of it, just because I didn't like the crust it would form at the bottom; not knowing that the crust is a prized part of cooked rice. I now cook rice on the stove and it comes out wonderful, except that I too have to watch it for boil-overs. I have an Aroma single burner induction and a coil electric stove. My induction burner cooks too fast on #1 (and there's no lower setting). I do what I do on the coil stove.......have part of the pot off the heat. Comments (12)I have a MAJOR mold allergy, so this isn't just a matter of aesthetics for me. In fact, when we moved into our previous rental I had discovered a plume of mold damage on the back wall and under the wall kitchen cabs. The owner then figured out that that was the location where she'd kept HER rice cooker for years and years. So I'm concerned, and I do pull the rice cooker forward as much as possible (on a 24" counter), but the front and bottom edge of the wall cabinets still get steamy (cabinet rail is 15" above counter). And, I just looked and there are brown condensation spots underneath the top cabinet, behind the light rail. Am I the only one?? For those of you with NO problems from the cooker, how far is its vent from your upper cabinets -- both horizontally and vertically? I've found 50-90CFM bathroom fans @ 0.3 sones. (0.5 is the sound of rustling leaves), so that's quiet enough. But it would be an under-insulated penetration in a (SF Bay Area) house we hope to have very insulated. However, it does seem like overkill, I recognize. Comments (9)Which ever machine you choose, I'd also give her a copy of "The Ultimate Rice Cooker Cookbook" by Beth Hensperger and Julie Kaufmann so she can get even more use out of the rice cooker by cooking not just rice, but also other whole grains (making a wide variety of pilafs, risotto, polenta, chilis, soups, porridges, puddings, whole meals and more - from recipes in the cookbook). If you can locate the book at your local library (or through inter-library loan), there is a great deal of information about types of rice cookers, features, functions, etc., that would be helpful with your choice - so it will "fit" her needs....See MoreRice cooker
Comments (17)I use a pressure cooker for rice, and it is quick and easy. In addition to making plain rice (which I seldom do), and often add various vegetables, which required me to adjust the amount of water/broth, but that has not been a problem. For plain rice, I rinse the rice in a large strainer, put it into the PC and add 1-1/2 times as much water as the rice I originally measured. I have a portable induction burner that is compatible with my PC, and I set that for 5-6 minutes on high and then turn the heat level down to low (250°F) and let it cook for 6 minutes more. The burner turns itself off, and I leave the pan on the burner (which is not hot by now) until the pressure indicator goes down, and then I open the lid and fluff the rice. The last time I made it with zucchini, and I reduced the water by 1/2 cup for each zucchini (I only used one), but I also added half an onion and three cloves of garlic, plus some butter and parsley (because I have it in my yard). When I add fresh thyme, I bundle it with a bit of string and remove the stems after the rice is cooked. I generally add thyme when I add mushrooms, and I often use dried mushrooms, which I reconstitute first and then use the soaking liquid as part of the water. I recommend getting a PC instead of a rice cooker. I had a roommate in college (when I went back for my design degree) from Hong Kong, and he had a rice cooker. Rice was the only thing he ever cooked, and I was not impressed. I cannot imagine anything a rice cooker could do that a PC could not....See Morelocaleater
