Kitchen wall idea

We plan to have only wall cabinets on one side of our kitchen. We plan to have large tiles on the wall area close to cook-top up to the ceiling. But, we wonder if it looks nice if the areas in both sides (between the right side of the hood to the fridge, and between the left side of the hood and the corner) of the tiling area are just painted? Any idea? Thanks!

I think it depends on the color of the tile and the color of the wall. you also need to consider how the tile ends, you are going to want a finished edge. Tiles are easier to clean than dry wall.

Notice the border behind the stove, and how the tile doesn't just stop it has a nice finished edge. Also, you don't really notice that the tile doesn't go all the way up.

In this picture you can see that the tile doesn't go all the way up, but other things catch the eye like the upper and the window. Maybe consider putting shelves, a painting, or old signs.

In the end, its all about your budget and style.

I see a few layout problems. If you post a 2 dimensional drawing I can offer specific solutions. To name a few, it looks like your fridge is >9' from your sink and you don't have enough clear floor space on the knob side of that swinging door.

I don't think you need anything on that wall. Since you have pet bowls on the floor right in front of it, it may be awkward to try to get anything off a shelf. I would consider painting the wall(s) a different color since they seem to blend with the ceiling. A little color is all you need.

I know you're eager to get some work done, as we all are during the delays, but paint is not an inexpensive investment regardless of your time to apply. Benjamin Moore's Aura paint is water-resistant and a good choice for a kitchen area. It's nearly impossible for me to suggest a color not knowing what your new backsplash and countertops will look like. What you have now isn't yellow and blends with your current decor. Did you want to give some ideas of the colors of your new countertop and backsplash selections so the Houzz community might comment on looking forward to your new decor?

plan for some color with paint.....bring the mirror into the center of line of vision,,,,,it seems weird on the left side like that. search for something shallow to place objects/books if you want /flea market/resale shops...etc.... incorporate a few things on the wall around the mirror. Here are some mirrors used with wall color...dont know about navy walls...but anyway...

This is the 2D drawing. We changed a little. The tall cabinet is removed. The top of the picture is the wall w/ hood and fridge where no wall cabinet is installed. We are thinking if it looks better if we put wall cabinets on the wall w/ the hood, and remove all wall cabinets on the opposite wall (bottom of the picture). By the way, the door knob of the swinging door is on the right edge of the door and the door swing toward the cabinet/couter-top side.

Any suggestion? Thanks a lot!

You should have at least 18" of clear floor space (no cabinets) on the knob side of that swinging door. So if the knob is on the sink side, you should eliminate some cabinets or change the door swing to put the knob on the other side.

Does that door go to a garage?

The knob is away from the sink side. Yes, the door goes to garage.

Can the door be changed to outswing to the garage? Not sure if there's any reason to only use in-swing door.
