Saturday blooms and repeats
Comments (11)Chris (maximus)has been an enabler with Berma Abercrombie when she posted pics of hers so I went and got 4 fans from Robin Calderon. It is increasing like a rabbit here and I counted 10 scapes this morning on it. Last year I got several from Judy and they haven't skipped a beat with our long cold winter. I didn't count fans on What's Up Down South. I started with a double fan and I am guessing it just doubled to 4 fans with 3 scapes. Nice tall scapes and no leaning. Ribbit Ribbit was a gift from Judy and I'm more than happy with its performance here. Started with double fan and it is now at 5 fans with 5 scapes.. Also nice and tall with no leaning. Comments (8)VULCAN LOGIC - missed the first bloom but this one is small and scapes are short. ITZA PINK TEDDY - opening today. small blooms. KENTUCKY LUCKY - opening today but not so lucky has several scapes have buds that died as seen in the photo. THUNDERCAT - I wanted to show the color of Maui Sunrise showing a more orange tone. Seedling cross of PPS X KI. Not wanting to open nicely and it is very small this year. That is it for today. Fingers crossed we gets some rain overnight. Comments (8)What a magnificent clump of Claudine's Charm! I love the bloom, but after losing it twice, I've given up on it. It interests me that your say Jellyfish Jealousy always has tall scapes. It's only registered at 24 inches. I've grown mine in a pot for more than a dozen years, and 24 inches is what I get. But I saw it on 27-28 inch scapes in a garden in Kingsport. It looks like you will have many flowers on that High Watermark clump. I think my most favorite photo is the one of Gentle on My Mind and Lost in the Toy Store. The clump shot of Maui Sunrise looks much more how mine looks most of the time. Beautiful post, Julia! Debra...See MoreRepeat blooming, climber, yellow rose, vintage or antique?
Comments (5)That's funny! "Deer resistant roses"! LOL! Like "dog resistant organic plant food". Banksiae is the most "deer resistant" I've encountered. I believe it's because it isn't succulent and they don't recognize it. But, they WILL browse it if nothing else is around. Perhaps that is why someone thought Roxburghii might also be resistant? Mermaid was successful in Pacific Palisades, but I think that was primarily due to it growing fast enough and being sufficiently prickled to outrun the deer. And, it's yellow and repeat blooming. If deer are a problem around that ailing cherry tree, you're either going to have to enclose it in chicken wire or some other barrier or use chemical means to protect it. You might check out the Repellex Systemic Animal Repellent to see if something like it might help. If possible, you could also plant a field of lavender, rosemary, santolina or some other offensively smelly plant surrounding the rose to help prevent the deer from devouring it. Their sense of smell is their primary defense mechanism. A large area of stinky planting jams their radar, preventing them from smelling nearby predators and often helps protect the plants they surround. But, seriously, roses ARE "deer food" and WILL require protection if there are deer around and they feel safe browsing the area. Good luck....See MoreMaryl (Okla. Zone 7a)
