Backsplash Backfire - Small Job Gone Crazy
Comments (4)HANG ON!! First of all, 1/4" backerboard is way too flimsy without something behind it for wall tile. It's usually used over plywood for flooring underlayment. Secondly, even if it WERE okay for wall work, the sheetrock you're butting up to is 1/2". You want whatever you're tiling over to be flush to that sheetrock. Lastly, you don't need cement board for a backsplash. That's money wasted. Regular sheetrock will work fine, as you're finding out right now. No need to remove cabinets, countertop, or anything else. Cut it back as far as you need to, hopefully ending on studs at both ends. If you don't, it's not really a big deal, though. Simply screw a piece of wood into the back of the end of the good sheetrock, so that when you put the new piece in, you have something to screw the end of it into, so that it's supported, and the patch and existing sheetrock stay nice and flush. Once you do that, go over the seam with fiberglass mesh tape, and you're ready to tile....See Morenervous that backsplash is wrong
Comments (48)I should have posted this here.... instead of responding to you in the thread that I posted about my backsplash redo. Reposted: Lissa - I have started to respond to your two threads numerous times, but I can never seem to get my wording right. I want to say "If you don't like it rip it out," but I am one of the unfortunate few who know what that means. The problem is this: I would only be saying that because you don't care for it, and really, that is all that matters right? However, from the pictures you have posted here, you have a GORGEOUS kitchen. Personally, I LOVE your tile. But again.... does that matter? It's not my kitchen! (Just an FYI - this forum hated my tile backsplash for various reasons, so I was not in the same boat as you.) So what do I say... I think you are figuring out what is best for you. I like your idea of changing only part of it because that can change the whole complexion and most importantly, your feelings regarding the backsplash. I wish you the best on your very tough decision. (Just remember one itty bitty thing... even if you do nothing at all....a lot of us here think that you have a beautifully stunning kitchen!)...See MoreCabinetmaker Gone! Comments (44)The low one seems like it's just hanging on by a thread, and needs a bit more. I would go a row or two higher with the lower option (choosing exactly how much by how much of the pattern you wanted there and where is the 'right place' to end it)... Close to halfway between the bottom of the cabinet and the first shelf. If it lined up with the shelf and the muntin, I feel like that would be too much matching lines of things that shouldn't be connected. The higher one seems too much and fights with the balance of your window design. Again, JMO....See MoreHow to make your own tile and back-splash (pic heavy)
Comments (25)I'm not sure how I came across this post, I think it was displayed on the right side and I clicked on it being intrigued by the tile making. I was at one time interested in working with papercrete and hypertufa. But after enlisting my brother, who wasn't as enthusiastic, and my niece, who poured cement down my laundry room sink, which original to the house had lasted 70 years, and ruining three blenders, my interest waned. True to form, if I come upon difficulty in a project, I think of it as a sign for me not to continue. And really, after all these years of trying various crafts that result in crap, I should know better. I also should have known better than to ask my brother, who always says it can't be done to any of my unique design ideas. And I should have known better than to ask my niece, who once stayed up all night before having to drive to LA for an art show, cutting mat after mat after measuring once, twice, sometimes ten times, but always coming out with the wrong size. I think we both have math dyslexia. I should video us trying anything crafty to see where we go wrong. I think both of us having ADHD might have something to do with it. Sorry for the backstory and run on sentences. So, I just wanted to see if you continued with your venture. And to say sorry for whatever tragedy occurred to cause you to have to move to Florida. Not that there is anything wrong with Florida, but it isn't Panama. Which is one of my favorite places in the western hemisphere. I hope no one is upset that I brought up a seven year old post....See Moreannied75
