Comments (5)Hi benjesbride - I haven't been active lately but couldn't help but respond to your inquiry as I too love galley kitchens! I redid my galley and placed the sink and range on the same side because it made sense for how I work. Fast-forward almost 2 years and I stand by the decision 100% as I love the long counter space on my refrigerator side while also preferring the ease of movement between my sink and range! Comments (20)It's hard to tell because we don't see enough of the plan to know where all the entrances and exits go and we don't know enough about you, the way you cook and your family to make worthwhile suggestions ... consider yourself warned, because I obviously am going to go ahead make suggestions without knowing anything. The zone idea is that from a cooking zone, you would be able to access everything you needed to cook - the prepped veg, meat, egg, bean curd, water, drain, strainer, pots, pans, baking dishes, the broiler, the wok and a chan. Or imagining pancakes is a good exercise. Where are the eggs, the flour, the wisk, the baking powder, or perhaps the package that says "pancake mix", the bowls, the spatula? Where will you keep the griddle or whatever you make pancakes in? If its electric, where will it sit? Sausage with that? Want to add a few berries and a dip of whipped cream? Look at the plan and make pancakes, how many steps will it be? You have an interesting problem because all of your food storage(pantry and ref) is around the bend and across the room. It says to me that the kitchen is laid out wrong UNLESS you are a very organized person who will take a "shopping trip" to the food and pick everything up in very few trips. I'd start looking at ways to move the ref and move the prep and move the cleanup or perhaps even think of a completely different layout. Possibly observations with reservations for the unknows: ---- I'd hate a kitchen without a direct exit to an outdoor cooking/entertainment area. ---- Your dishes and clean up area might be not in the best location. People need dishes and silverware all the time and need to return dirty ones and place in dw. It looks inconvenient where it is right now. Part of placing a clean up zone is figuring that out and how much access to the clean up zone you need from the cooking zone for getting dishes or pot drop off. ---- I am not seeing a coffee bar, alcohol bar, or wine stuff. If none of these are of interest to you, that's fine, I'm just mentioning it. ---- Tell dude that's a four seater island as the corner space can only be used by a diner on one side. ---- I know this will sound awful, but you need a five to six foot aisle between the island edge and the ref if the stools remain as drawn and it may still be kind of a pita to get some milk once the stools are filled. ---- I would hate the relationship between the stools and the cooking surface. Comments (6)Sounds like a very promising project, and I love your 2 little verandas. Depending on the views out those windows/need for privacy, it might be really nice for the view from one side to the other to specifically be wide open there (blast the usual apartment expectations). But, you need to offer a to-scale drawing of what you are thinking, plus some details about how you live, how many of you, and how you will use the kitchen (usually microwave frozen food, passionate bread baker, etc.) etc. Without that, some people just don't post, others post a lot of stuff that's just plain impossible or undesirable....See MoreHelp!! Comments (24)You all are HILARIOUS and helpful, too. I want to thank all of you for the quick feedback. This is really good stuff- even the steam mop. My MIL brought one during her last visit to clean my kitchen floor for me. She constantly raves about it. I think the point was that even if you get stuff on the floor from walking all around in a bigger triangle, that there are easy ways to get clean again... Anyway, I wish I could comment back to each person specifically, but I'm just too tired to focus that clearly right now. In a perfect world, I would have every detail of my whole kitchen vetted by the GW community! Thanks. It is now 4am and I could not sleep. I have a three mo baby who peacefully sleeps through the night, yet I'm still losing sleep over this blasted kitchen!! I just can't win. OK. Maybe I still win b/c I don't know many babies and toddlers that would put up with all the dragging around I've done with my kids over the past several weeks! Anyway, we worked with the designer tonight and added a prep sink into the perimeter. It takes away a little bit of work space, but we can easily add a work table that is a little more authentic to the vintage look anyway. I'm happy. I think. Sometimes you just have to go with your gut, and cross your fingers and say a little prayer and hop on one foot and, well- just hope for the best! I'm tired. Hopefully you get my point. lol Based on what I've read across many of the threads, it seems as though many people spend a reallly long time on kitchen design and renovation. We only began the process about two months ago and have to be into the house in one month. So, I've been working on a seriously intense design and build schedule. My last few months literally consisted of the following: find temp apt, move to new area, give birth, buy house, design kitchen, build kitchen.... move in. Yes, this will all have been done within six months. Can I have a cookie now? ;) If you think this is nuts, you don't want to hear about my previous year- I went to live in Europe and could only bring my kid and some clothes. Just call me nuts. Seriously, I'm not sure I could agonize much longer over a kitchen anyway. As much as I love spending time in the kitchen, this whole renovation business just sucks the life out of you!! Between the renovation and having two small children, it's amazing there is any life left in me!! Alright, well I suppose I should try to get some more sleep... before everyone wakes up in a couple hours and I'm back in marathon mode again.
