Living room Couch layout? Design ideas?

I'm working on re-doing our living room area to be more functional.

We mostly watch TV here, and kids use it as a playroom, where it is close to the kitchen and where we can see them while we are doing other tasks around the house. We often entertain other families with children as well. I moved a kids drawing table to another area of the house, since it was blocking the window.

We still have to keep most of the kids toys in this room, because they always end up here anyway and that works for our family.

What do you think about this layout? How did I do with the couch placement on the rug? Pictures are taken from the front door and by the kitchen for two perspectives. There is a fireplace by the leather swivel chair.

Any suggestions on how to improve this layout and materials? I'm aiming for something like this look here, sort of a navy storm, whiskey and polished brass + neutrals type of idea. (I might get rid of the rug which doesn't match)

Very nice room. I would first rethink the fireplace wall. It seems to be buried by furniture. The tv on top of piano frankly looks terrible. A piano is too nice to be ruined by a tv. If possible, relocate the piano and get a proper stand for the tv.

I agree about the piano, it was a childhood birthday gift/family heirloom and I truly dislike having it there. I'm sure overtime, the TV legs could wear into the piano.

The fireplace itself is actually a two-way fireplace that can be used from either the kitchen or the living room. We are not proud of this wall, because it is a strange configuration and I guess it shows. Eventually, I may want this wall torn down, but of course, there will be challenges with a widely open floor plan, particularly for kitchen cabinet space.

There are also shades that roll up and roll down that are kinda cool, but pricey. If glare is a problem, curtains are the solution!!! Denita says to hang them close to the ceiling. I always use thermal or backed curtains because we live in Indiana, and it gets cold!! Great idea about the bookcases.

Hi- More pictures of the rest of the room would be good. Maybe a slender table along the wall with simple decorations like candlesticks or those orchids? This is also a good place for a wall hanging or beautiful rug hung as art. If you do a wall hanging you might skip a table. It would be too crowded. I would favor the rug on the wall and then you can scootch the couch back a bit and get more room in front of it.

Here's a more accurate room layout with the dimensions of the room and recessed area for the TV. The very simple website I was using doesn't really let me specify an open archway or change the layout of the walls to reflect the recessed area in the corner with the door, but I don't think it matters much. I'm more concerned with having seating for at least 5 people, not obstructing the window view, and giving everyone a good view of the TV. I was thinking perhaps the chair on the left should be a swivel chair, to allow someone to turn and watch the TV better. I could do without the chair there at all, but would like to have family over on occasion and it would be nice to seat more than 4. Do you guys think this would work?

I think the room looks good within the constraints you have. I agree that the TV over the piano is less than ideal. Is there any other place for the piano? Does anyone even play it?

Have you tried flipping the two chairs and the swivel to opposite sides? It might occlude the fireplace less.
