My Antiques Won BIG at the County Fair

One of the categories at our County Fair in the Open Class (for non 4-Hers) is Antiques -- broken down into a lot of categories and then different classes under that.

I took a few items and all of them got blue in their class and some got blue in their division. All in all I received $44 from the fair in prize money --

What I took:

A WW 1 picture of my father taken at his basic training (blue in antique photography)

My Dad's WW 1 etching which was given to him for being wounded (no purple heart in WW 1) --

(blue in paper, blue in patriotic, blue in category)

3 sterling napkin rings which I got in England (blue in silver table items)

1850s English tea caddy (blue in table item, blue in category (which beat out the napkin rings))

1920s indoor/outdoor croquet set still in box (blue in games, blue in toys)

I DID get beat out for the BEST antique of the show (and a $20 prize) -- losing out to a cameo ring

It was fun and I'm thinking what I can bring next year.

Please find the published Fair Booklet.It will contain rules, categories, and an entrance form. Our fair in town has catagories for fruits,herbs,annuals,veggies,roses,dahlias, formal arrangements,and collections of all of the above.I cut my flowers the evening before they are to be delivered to the fairgrounds. They soak overnight in tepid water then arranged in a simple vase (milk bottles work great).Some flowers just don't cut well;poppies,calendula,impatients...but the judges know this...they just have to hold up till judging time. You will never get rich, but what a joy it is to get that blue ribbon.

I got a monster like that too! Not sure if it is 'Little Dillicious' or 'Homemade Pickles' because the vines are all intertwined. I think yours might be bigger though : ) Bonnie

Thanks Rodney for the trip to the fair !!! You made a day of it !! looking at one of the parking lots & general attendance (people walking) from the ferris wheel or gondola ride...its HUGE !! Can you tell I live in a small town ?? ha !! Margarita's and the food choices looked yummy !! Thank you again for the pictures. You saved me $17 admission and parking fees !!! Cali~

Nice. Congrats...open class is hard. Sorry Bud couldn't enter his garlic. Always sad to see fair departments dwindle. Baking, photography, quilts and flowers (esp. dahlias) are the biggies here...lots of competition. And jam...lots of jam. Good for you for getting more competition going. I remember winning champion canner (or whatever they called it at the time) because they used a point system and I had the most blues, but only because I entered the most - nine jars. Hollow victory. I'm not entering any preserved food this year...they conned me into judging.

What a wonderful idea to give prizes for family antiques. Yours are so sweet. I'll bet that photo of your dad was tossed around, maybe by the children. I say that because I remember how, as children, we took some of those old things for granted.
