It all depends on what look you're trying to achieve, and perhaps the size of your bathroom. We have 2 full baths and one 1/2 bath. Prior to our remodel, the smaller of our bathrooms only had tile in the shower, and in our MB, tile in the shower and around the tub (which was separate), about 1' up the walls from the top of the tub. The walls outside the shower were painted. The 1/2 bath had no tile on the walls. (All three had tile floors.) In our remodel, in the smaller of our bathrooms, along with the floor, we are tiling the wall opposite the vanity to chair rail height, painting above that tile, and tiling the shower. There will not be any tile on the wall where the vanity will go. In the MB we are tiling the floor, the shower, and the walls around the nook where we are putting a freestanding bathtub. We are not tiling the wall with the vanity. In both of these bathrooms we'll be painting the vanity wall. And our 1/2 bath will have tile again only on the floor.

I would only go as far as the underside of the uppers. Those upper areas are pretty disconnected. You want the eye to follow horizontally along the lowers, not up to the ceiling, which isn't your kitchen's best feature. P.S. Love the artwork!

I mounted them full-width of the room and LOVE IT THIS WAY! Thank you guys so much for the tip. Had it not been for you, I would have mounted close the window frame. Attached are photos and thoughts: - My room is actually pretty bright (window facing west), shooting against the light makes it look dark. - Yes, I know the curtains are way too short and not wide enough. I will buy double-width ones, and longer (then cut to the right length, just above the floor but not touching). - Yes, I will replace the ceiling fan. Let me know of any modern ones you think about. Either dark or light color is fine. - I will probably get rid of the vertical blinds and go for light-filtering curtains on the inside rod or bamboo/cellular blinds? The idea is to have an option to block out the harsh western sun at 5-8pm each day but not totally blackout the room. Any other ideas? - Are the curtains too high? I love the height but wonder if they are in fact crowding the molding too much. I also pulled the curtains too far out from the wall, I think if I push them in closer to the wall, it will crowd less. (I'm using Ikea curtain hardware with the adjustable slider mounts, btw.) - Are the curtain rods at the right distance from side walls? I think yes? - Do you guys think I should go for a lighter curtain color? I think I still like the dark rod. White rods kinda look too plastic-ey. - I love grommets because they slide and fold-up so nicely but willing to explore others (rod-pockets).

If you do floating shelves around the window, I would recommend the backsplash to be up to the bottom of the first shelf. If no shelving, up to the window sill with matching countertop material or just a washable paint. Full height Tile to ceiling at range would be nice too. Of course, it also depends on what materials you use what I would do with them. I attached a photo of the look that I have been enjoying and the 1st comment was suggesting creating a focal wall.
