Calla lily question
Comments (1)Callas are neither a bulb or a lily but rather a rhzomatous perennial native to South Africa. They are are closely related to peace lilies and other members of the arum family. There are a couple of species of hardier callas that will grow in ground in warmer zones but most callas and especially the colored ones are treated as summer flowering 'bulbs' like dahlias, etc. Ones that are purchased in bloom now have been greenhouse grown and forced into bloom early. And it is entirely possible that the plant could be entering dormancy as they do go into a dormant period once the flowering is over. Generally, if planted in late spring for a summer bloom as is the case with other summer flowering bulbs and bulb-like plants, that dormancy period would coincide with colder weather and our fall/winter seasons. That being said, I'm not sure that dormancy is necessarily what's happening. Callas - greenhouse grown ones forced into early bloom - are going to be quite sensitive to cold temperatures. They are also very touchy about soil moisture....do not let the soil dry out but it also can't be soaking wet. I'd keep the plant indoors in bright, indirect light until all chance of frost is passed and nighttime termperatures remain above 50. Keep evenly moist. If the plant does go into full dormancy, you can store the bulbs and replant in fall for late spring/early summer blooms. Comments (1)Sadly cutting off the foliage so early was not a good move. It was far too soon since it is still very green and the bulbs needed it to build them up for next year. I just plant all forced hyacinths straight into the garden after flowering. They are really difficult to force again at anything like the vigour of the first year. I can only suggest you heel them in somewhere out of the way, allow them to properly died down and wait and see if they come up again in the spring. There is no need to lift them to store. They can stay in the ground underneath whatever you plant on top....See More1 of 8 doing poorly

Comments (9)Penny, I just got in today after being in Canada (Ontario...Thunder Bay, to be exact) for a week. I came home to find a Queen fluttering about, ovipositing all over the place! I let my other Queen out (one had died), and two Gulf Frits. A Red Admiral showed up as I was watering everything. I haven't been online in a week so I don't know what's going on as your post was the first I saw. I was quite thrilled to find the Queen, who was so very friendly, to boot, hanging about. I also spotted some GF eggs but I haven't really looked very hard. OH, I also saw a Mourning Cloak. I am hoping this one decides to oviposit on my Willow as I saw it hanging around my Willow tree.
