You started talking about smokers, and yes that little cube sounded phenomenal, especially at that price break. Even my bride only batted her eyes just a few times.

So I began the search/research. I was almost convinced until I remembered a gift card to Bass Pro Shop that I had won (and it was legit).

It was the cooking times, and outside charcoal fire box that attracted me, plus the notion of a convection smoker, with similar times to my new(er) convection oven.

And I have tons of apple trees for my smoking pleasure *snicker*

I figger I can always abandon/upgrade and turn it into a flower pot ...

I will be trying it out this weekend ...

Oh good lord! I wish you'd spoken to me first. I had one of these for about six months. They make an amazing turkey, but don't waste your money cooking ribs in there. Yuk. I gave mine to a friend who uses it for nothing but turkey. Good luck!

well, turkey is what I got it for, cuz I didn't want to oil fry turkey (but love to eat it). That's just asking for trouble IMHO.

Plus I am looking for ease of transport.

I know the ribs won't get a bark. I am looking forward to smoked pork loin, however ...

what did you not like about the ribs?

do you like fall off the bone, or gnaw off the bone?

The pipevine swallowtail laid it's eggs on the calico pipevine (Aristolochia elegans) along with all the polydamas swallowtail eggs. I saw the PST fluttering around the vine, so I watched to see where she laid the eggs and went immediately to retrieve them. I found several other clusters that had the reddish-orange color so I clipped them out too. I cut the little section of vine they were on close to the eggs and placed them on a potted Aristolochia fimbriata in my habitat. Out of probably 20 tiny caterpillars only TWO are still surviving! But, I'm very hopeful they will live to butterflyhood! :) I am excited that I finally have a spicebush chrysalis! I have a camphor tree (Cinnamomum camphora) in my yard that is their host plant. I have 8 or 10 SBST caterpillars in all instars that I am excited about. I get so frustrated because I frequently have caterpillars that look plump and healthy and ready to go to chrysalis just die on the spot where they are feeding! I have found small spiders in the habitat which I squish. Can they be the reason for the caterpillar deaths?? Being a butterfly mamma is painful sometimes - but I really love it when I set free a beautiful healthy butterfly - and that happens often too.

Melvalena, how wonderful that your DD was inspired to do some tablescapes and what wonderful ones she did! She shows a knack for both a fun theme and an elegant one, both are lovely! (Sounds like mom is a great help to her as well!) Serving her DH's mother's meatball recipe must have added to the great impression. Those are terrific hurricane candle holders - are the tops used in the snowman table too? If so,nice that they are so versatile. I also love her white/silver dishes, very pretty! My DD did do a little Thanksgiving table setting for two last fall and sent me pics of it. She was NEVER into that kind of thing before so I am hopeful.... that way, I have someone to pass on all of my dishes to someday! DD

"How did you handle it if the final result wasn't what you expected? Did you eventually grow to like it?" Our kitchen was done in bit and pieces, not all at once, so it was easier to tweak things over time. That said, I'm responding because I did NOT like the initial result. It wasn't quite what I was expecting. The cabinets were not as I expected them to look and it really bothered me for awhile. I had the cabinet maker add trim, change drawer fronts and do other things to get it closer to what I had been expecting. It took months. We apparently had a miscommunication somewhere up front (like he had false advertising!). It didn't cost me anything but I had to be persistant. Over time I finally got the kitchen to where I am happy with it but it took about a year. It happens sometimes. You see people on here buying one light fixture after another, or ripping out a backsplash, or repainting an island. I changed the floor! So how did I handle it? I kept working at it until I DID like the result. Good Luck and Keep Your Chin Up.

Happy Belated Birthday!!! That is one beautiful board. There is a store in the DC area called Appalachian Spring that would probably be happy to carry his work. I can only imagine a kitchen made with home made cabinets. Talk about custom!! Teak is great wood - choice of most boat builders for its durability and ability to hold up to sun. We had it on our sail boat and it was great. A little oiling and it looked new. It gets lighter as it bakes in the sun. We had it in the galley and it wore beautifully even though it got really wet at times. We have a relative who makes cabinets and furniture in his spare time. His kitchen cabinets are about 11 years old now. They are really beautiful and quite sturdy. His are made of a very light oak. Kudos to the hubby and buy him any tools he needs to encourage that habit!!

Bragu, I don't do ribs on my smoker. I do ribs on the grill. My smoker is for turkey, ham, Boston butts.

Turkey is amazing in the Orion but you MUST be accurate with your temperature. One or two extra minutes and the bird is overcooked. Cleanup is a pain - there's a lot of fluid in the pan after the cooking process is over, most of it grease. Let it cool down completely before you start to cleanup or you will warp the metal. I shoveled the hot coals out and into a throwaway pan to help it cool faster.

Ribs just don't taste like barbecue. More like oven-baked ribs. Same for pork tenderloin and Boston butt. It really is a great poultry cooker, but not for anything else in my opinion. I did cook 4 chickens in it at the same time and they came out great.

we do mostly poultry because i cannot have a lot of red meat
