I took some photos but don't know if I will ever get them posted. Plus the lighting was bad because I just shot them without any adjustments with off indoor lighting. It was an upscale old folks home where my uncle lives. The whole place appeared to have been designed by a very smart and capable decorator. Everything was color coordinated on all the floors, although each had a unique personality. But the whole thing was designed to give off a warm. cozy and upscale vibe. Problem for me using it would be that none of my things would match those colors. I have that "northwoods" color scheme going with maroon, blueberry, taupe, brown, forest green, tan, plum and sage. It'll be interesting to see how I pull off blending my mom's "spring/fall" color palette with my "winter/summer" one. I can use her colors if the intensity and tone is right. For example, I am fine with dark rust, watermelon or terra cotta but peach is death for me.

I'm not sure if I'm seeing green in the paint so much as a warm glow from your lighting. You might try a 3000K light bulb before you do any more painting. Tibb's choices give you an idea of how color plays. You should pick from the colors you like to live with. Too many people pick whites and light beige because they expect them to be safe, neutral and bright. They are just as much colors as darker choices and have just as much impact. Don't be afraid of color and don't count on walls to illuminate your reading material. If you want color, use it -- maybe buy another lamp or use a higher lumen or dayight rather than warm white bulb. If you want a light neutral, you could do a lighter greige. In SW colors that includes Accesible Beige or Agreeable Grey and others. That would be more of a tone on tone or monochromatic look in the room -- which would mean you would need soms accent colors in art, rug, pillows or other accessories. Try to look at the big picture as well as the paint on the wall.

I just painted my north facing room smokey taupe from Benjamin Moore. I tried BM Halo on poster board in the room and looked at it from all different angles and at all different times of day and thought I loved it. When the room was painted it looked mint green. I had to then make a decision about what color to repaint and snow made it so I couldn't go get samples -- so I did as much research as I could on other "grieges" and picked smokey taupe from a paint strip because the articles I found said it had red undertones versus green -- and I love it. Has a nice taupe-gray feel that's very neutral. The upshot is, pay attention to what research you can find about undertones -- I don't recommend picking from a paint strip, obviously, but the research helped a lot (and I guess I got a bit lucky). I know seeing is believing, but a little supplemental research can really help, too. Wish I had paid attention to it before I had to repaint!

Hi! Here's an update on paint colors I chose for my north-facing kitchen. For the doors and trim, I went with Sherwin Williams Westhighland White. I absolutely love it. It's also the color I painted my brown kitchen table. *BUT* word of caution here: we also painted the ceiling in Westhighland White flat ceiling paint and it darkened the room! My husband was very unhappy that he was going to have to repaint it as the kitchen is about 16' x 20', so it's a big ceiling. But, back to the SW's store where an employee saved my marriage by selling us a can of Extra White and I asked for it in satin because the previous ceiling (painted by a contractor with generic white) had a sheen to it. As the Extra White was applied, you could noticeably see the yellow undertones of the Westhighland White. Still love WW on the table, doors and trim, just not for the ceiling. Now for the walls. Overall, I tried 9 different samples before finding the perfect one: Sherwin Williams Natural Linen. Here's the breakdown: 1) Kilim Beige: too dark for what I was going for and gray undertones 2) Softer Tan: lighter but still too dark and I just didn't like the tone 3) Divine White: way too light 4) Patience: a bit too light and with yellow undertones, it was too close to what I'd had for years. I was looking for something new 5) Wool Skein: noticeable green undertones 6) Only Natural: a pretty shade, but in my kitchen, it presented with pink undertones which made my Santa Cecilia granite countertops look dirty! If I'd used this color, nothing would have made the kitchen look clean, ever 7) Natural Tan, and 8) Sand Dollar - can't remember why I didn't like these last two, but they just didn't work Natural Linen is the perfect shade to go with the cabinets which are that orange-y shade, it goes with the granite, backsplash, almost all my wall decor (might have to swap out a clock) and the vinyl floor. I have the popular leaf fabric (beige, gold, red) covering the window seat cushion and it even goes perfectly with that. There's just enough color in Natural Linen to contrast with the creamy Westhighland White while still keeping the room light and bright. We are still in the process of painting.
