Will Thuja Green Giants regrow after deer browsing, etc
Comments (13)I'm the OP. Just an update (if anyone is reading & well I feel guilty killing anything alive so justifying it to myself out loud). After much reflection I have decided to remove 2x of these. One is a double trunked one & had deer rubbing on trunks. The other one is just pathetic looking. Truth be told when we bought these.. the nursery made a delivery mistake & in rectifying it by sent a double order. Of course we were sort of thrilled, since we actually had only purchased 5 originally. But now as time goes on, I really don't like the monoculture look & I'm afraid that's what we have. Although for the privacy these can't be beat. I'm adding in a duraheat river birch & a red cedar to replace the 2x being pulled. I will also add in time maybe holly or something else so it's not all thuja greens. I would rather do this now, while the trees are weak & small enough. Can't imagine trying to rip out 20 footers! I also will be deer fencing this spring (&/or coming fall) since I realize it's all a lost cause if I don't (including any new plantings) Well...just to say thanks to all who responded....See MorePaint Samples Gone Wrong
Comments (8)Generally you want to get white on the wall behind/around your samples otherwise the existing wall color will alter the appearance of the sample. Like we have a room painted a dirty sage green and the tiny sample patches I put up just to check how the paint looked next to the fireplace stone almost all look pink even though they’re all brown/grey/griege tones. The green just pulls out any hint of pink in the paint. For my proper samples I first painted big pieces of white poster board and moved them around the room to see how the light changed the colors, and once I had the list narrowed I primed a big section of the wall white and then painted the samples on there. Much much less pink....See MoreCedar beam stain gone wrong, photos in comments
Comments (24)Oh wow, I am sorry to hear that. They should at least give you a discount if you end up replacing the beam. I would go with smooth cedar if given option over again since the stain on so much more predictable. We are building our house and have rough cedar beam indoor and cedar headers outdoor trim...so I just ordered yet another stain today called light walnut and hope that it works out. Lol... For Exterior cedar I am having an even harder time than my interior cedar beam because they don't offer many samples for exterior stains so have to buy the whole gallon as sample (multiple gallons) ....boooh. :(. I have about 3 weeks before they begin staining mine so we will see. Well I will let you know if I find the one and good luck to you! I'd love to see your finished product....See MoreWhat has gone wrong in Design/Education?
Comments (142)A former neighbor of mine wanted to build an addition on the rear of his (row) house, which was smaller than many of the preexisting rear ells, but no longer compliant (encroached on now required open space by a small amount). A neighbor, not a next door neighbor fought him tooth and nail on this insisting it was going to block light from her house, cause water run off issues and so fourth. The guy in general was brilliant, so he ended up having satellite photos and then modeling to show that shadows would not reach her house, percolation studies showing that he could improve water run off and so forth. But since it was a variance she was prevailing to some extent. Finally his permit was getting ready to expire, and he realized that if he could demolish the house behind his, he would no longer even need a variance because there would be no other house to have distances from and lots of green space. So he knocked on the door of the backyard neighbor and said "Hey do you want to sell your house? I will give you cash, name your (reasonable) price, completed the deal and promptly slapped a demolition notice on that house. He even got an architect involved about how he would resolve that missing house on the charming street behind. That finally got enough attention of other neighbors none of whom objected to the original variance requested but had not wanted to get involved at that point....See Morein ny zone5
