The only time you will notice that the island is not lined up with the window is when you're standing directly in the middle of the island looking towards the window. How often do you anticipate that happening?

And the only ones who worry about things like that are 1. designers who don't have a clue about good kitchen design, and 2. photographers looking to take that one photograph.

If you're anticipating your kitchen to be photographed for any of the high end magazines, then yes, maybe you need to worry about it not being centered. Otherwise, nope.

What does the plan show?

Agree that you'll likely not notice it in the future.

Oh and one other thought. Move your body a bit off center of the island and then it will appear centered.

On my ceiling I have a linear AC vent that wasn't centered within the 2 windows. If I stand directly in the center, it is off center by a lot. However if I move over to one side, it magically appears centered. I never notice it though with everything else in my kitchen.

If you are worried about appearance in a kitchen, worry about balance not centricity.

If you are worried about function in a kitchen, make sure you work triangle is not interrupted by the island by more than a foot or whatever you are comfortable with. Or worry about things that effect the cook's ability to prepare food. And don't burn the salad.

One can usually have symmetry or good function in a kitchen, but quite often not both. Symmetry is not essential. Good function is!

Once completed, you (or anyone else) will not notice symmetry issue.

My advice is to forget any compensation, and retain the good will and good work of your builder.

You all are giving me great feedback! The original plan does show the window centered which would have made it all perfect. I guess it's just the principle of the thing. First new house we've ever had built in 35 years, so it's a little disheartening. I'm sure it will be fine.

The appearance of that, making it unbalanced, would bother me a little bit. The asymmetry wouldn't bother me as much. But, the trade-off is ... more storage? No downside there!

It's fine if it does not visually distract you. Symmetry bothers me a lot but that's me and my engineering brain.

Assuming this is a full custom, did you ask him to fix and follow plans? I know, stupid q.

He should have built what the plan shows. Why do you think it’s too late to fix it? What is on the exterior of your house?

Well, we really just realized it when the island was placed for the flooring install. Not like we went and measured everything after the rough in (guess we should have). Anyway, drywall and siding are up, so no changing it now. Here's a pic of the outside (it looks pretty centered on the outside, but it's actually 6" too far to the right). Also, I'm sure our cabinet designer noticed it and never said a word.

My island is not centered on my kitchen window either. I did it on purpose to give myself plenty of walk-way room. Mine looks very similar to yours. It doesn't bother me at all. I also have a similar cabinet arrangement. It's fine. :-)

My hunch is that because it's new and you're looking at all the tiny details, it's jumping out at you. But once you're in and going on with your life, hopefully you end up as happy with it as I am with mine.

Its not too late to center the window if that is what the plan shows.

Looks comfortable to me. Your cabinetry on either side isn't matching the other side (and it certainly doesn't need to). This means the window is free to go where it best fits...

Yes the sink is centered on the window. Thanks to all the comments I'm feeling a lot better about it.

I wouldn’t mind the window or the island being off center. But did the “cabinet designer” work off the actual framed room and not the house plan? If she worked off the actual framed room, her plan should have taken into account the extra 6” on the side.

Now you have to add a 6” cabinet?? What kind of a 6” cabinet won’t look goofy? That 6” could have been made up for by making 2 cabinets each 3 inches wider in the planning stage. The builder dropped the ball and the kitchen designer let it roll away.

I would also double check that sink base and make sure it is centered under the window.

Is there room to move the island over so it’s centered on window?
