minimum practical size of 2-car garage

Mike Garrison

Hello,

In looking at 2-car garage layouts, I noticed that many, many new houses today have (on paper) a 20' x 20' garage with a 16' wide door. I think most of those garages actually measure 19'6" x 19'6", in some cases even less.

Is this realy enough for 2 cars? There wouldn't be much room between the cars and the walls or between both cars.

Is one were to go bigger, what would be a good size? Obviously, the bigger the better, but in keeping things realistic and proportional to the rest of the house...

In this case, figure a 3,000 square foot house.

Thanks for any advice!
