Furniture Storage & Closet home office

has anyone used a small dresser for office and file storage??

Was thinking of getting a lateral file cabinet for my office but when I saw how much one oils be I was like.... nope! Wondering if anyone has used a small dresser like this as a lateral file/storage for an office??

Paper is incredibly heavy, hence the cost of real file cabinets. I have found used file cabinets at Goodwill, used office furniture stores, garage sales, and auctions. Our local school board and college regularly hold auctions. A regular drawer system, like the one you show, will not hold the weight. Go to Staples, etc, and pick up ( not buy, just lift) a box of copy paper-you will be astonished at the weight. Now imagine that weight times the three drawers in your picture.

I should probably clarify- it won't be holding a ton of files... more like one drawer would be a ream of copy paper, ink cartridges, maybe a plastic organizer with some paints, crayons, pencils, etc. nd then one drawer would hold some important papers, files, etc. and the last drawer would hold blanks, card stock, and vinyl for craft projects. Blanks like koozies, tshirts, garden flags, pencil boxes, etc. The majority of the "files" would be school papers like report cards, progress reports, school documents, etc... maybe some paperwork for bills, etc. That's why I was leaning toward the dresser because it can still store items but also serve as a place to put the printer if needed. I thought about buying one of those large storage cabinets with doors or maybe even a bookshelf or cube system, but I'd like something a little more "closed up" without visible bins. I thought one of those modern dressers look more like office furniture than a dresser. :)

I actually talked to the attorney Thursday who was part of the team that file the Certainteed Class Action suit. I think he said litigants may get somewhere around 80/square in compensation. We are getting an estimate today from a quality Owens Corning preferred contractor (that extends your warranty). OC bid 39 squares and they don't have a clue how many squares it will take. Well, I'll find out today for sure. If I become part of the class action suit I'll forfeit my ability to negotiate one on one but just in case, the attorney has our information. However, this suit was just file in 2009 so judging by the Certainteed suit, it could take another 4 years. So, our local roofing company is trying to interceed for us. And, the warranty dept is waiting to hear the exact squares needed. She also mentionned something about building in shingles into the deal so it does sound like you can negotiate....but probably not in a class action suit. hilltop, you mentioned steel roofing. We are also looking at the Decra stone coated steel roofing. What did you hear or think about that? If OC gives us the free shingles plus the 3k (which would be completely fair IMHO) we'll forgo the steel, but otherwise, I don't want to go through this again and a steel roof looks enticing, although expensive.

Remember the steel hangers I mentioned upthread? I'm so incredibly sad--Bed Bath & Beyond stopped selling them!! We went in for another reason, and I said, "Let's stock up on a bunch of those!" No more. Now the only ones I've seen that are close are the chrome ones at Container Store and a few other places, but I don't like the chrome. Oh, well. Clothes are very easy to put on them and to remove from them..... perhaps some folks don't like good quality hangers that really do their job....hang onto clothes until they're meant to come off. Isn't that a little "some folks" a bit of an insult? i'm not an inferior person to you just because I don't like Huggable Hangers!! ! I like hangers that let me slide the clothes off the hanger easily. The smooth steel hangers I have "do their job" the way *I* define it. I've never heard from Joy Mangano that they were supposed to swivel swiftly, just that they may be turned in either direction to suit your needs. Ummmmm. . . . can't ANY hanger be turned in either direction? If someone went out of their way to tell me that, I would probably assume that this had to be a slightly unusual feature, and I'd think you meant "without taking them off the rod," which would mean swiveling. That's a very clever little piece of marketing--mentioning this basic trait of ALL hangers implies that it's some sort of extra.

Oh--photo print paper, etc.! I do this in a drawer intended for files--I just put some hanging folders in there, and set the paper in the folders. But that does raise the stuff in the folders up a little, and some of the outer cardboard envelopes of the sticky labels, etc., do come close to the top of the drawer. If you think that might happen to you, then just get one of those "desk sorter" or "vertical sorter," or a "pot lid rack" to go in the bottom. That will keep them from flopping over, and make it easy to pull them out. (though, some of those 'desk sorter' things are themselves raised up a bit at the bottom; if that bottom platform is very high you might have a problem, so get one w/ the flattest platform possible. Or you could cut some foam board or mat board about 4 inches too wide for the drawer, score it two inches from each end, then fold it to make a flap on each end, and then staple-gun the flaps to the walls of the drawer. That will keep the envelopes from flopping around. Just make the divider a couple of inches shorter that the drawer.

I like Penny's idea of using the closet for the office space. Can you use the dresser for storage? I mean, it's not taking up space in the room empty? For your makeup area, I'd figure out a spot near the window to take advantage of the natural light. Add a large full length mirror for function and style. Figure out what you need in terms of furniture and scour Craigslist and the like for second hand stuff. Anything can be painted and chalk paint is brilliant for this kind of stuff. You paint everything the same colour and there's your space looking cohesive and deliberate. Large scale art in colours you love on the walls will make it come alive. I'd skip the rug with a tight budget but I'm not a huge fan of rugs so... Good luck! Hope you keep us posted with your progress. This IKEA full length mirror has a practical clothes rod in the back:

I have two 3 drawer dressers from pottery barn that I use to store fabric and other sewing/quilting stuff. But as far as work files (I’m an attorney) I use a regular file cabinet for those and also for household paperwork.

I do like using the tops of the dressers (I have them side by side) for when I need the flat surface to lay out fabric to pin pattern pieces and cut them out for a sewing project. There are a few patterns I put onto heavy weight fusible interfacing so I can use them often without worrying that the flimsy tissue paper will rip or otherwise be damaged. If the pieces are long I store them in a plastic storage container designed to fit under beds but mine is in the closet of the basement 3rd bedroom I use for a home office/craft area.
