Is old fridge going to survive reno? Do I need an extinguisher?
Comments (9)Hot to the touch? Ancient piece of junk SxS? Like maybe from the early 80s or older? Sounds like the electric heater is stuck on. My admittedly vague recollection of SxS fridges from that era is that some of them had a swtich for the auto-defrost cycle and sometimes they had a switch or button for a moisture/condensation control. If you have one of those and can turn of the switch, do so. That may take care of the hot door frames. May take a couple of hours for the fridge to settle back down. If you have a not-quite-so-old fridge, you might want to try to vaccuum the condensor coils and condensor cooling fan (in the rear of the fridge, usually behind a metal or fiberboard panel that is held on with screws.) . Also, check to see if the condensor cooling fan is running. Turning the settings all the way down got it to stop running for 20 minutes? What happens if you turn the dials/sliders up towards off? If you've had it all the way down and move the controls back up, it should stop running several stops before off. None of the above helps? I'm with GreedDesigns, then. Time to shut it off, stash stuff in the cooler (or witha neighbor), and look for a new unit ASAP. I wouldn't leave it running hot. Overhead cabs really make the room close in on you, esp. if they are dark, and DW can only reach the bottom shelf without resorting to a step-stool. We plan to get rid of the mish-mash of dishes we have now, and buy a reasonable amount of dishes that match the decor and each other. These will be on open shelves. The same goes for glassware. It'll be just two of us- how many cups/bowls/plates/glasses do two people need? Instead of cabinet doors, I plan to have nearly all drawers. Measure the inside of your cabinets versus the actual volume of stuff in there- you'll find about 3/4 of it is empty air space. I'm going to have a dedicated spice drawer, with matching jars, with labels on the lids. The bottom of the drawer will be labeled as well, so you know at a glance which spice goes where. We have dozens of different spices, and it's a major expedition to find the one you need with our current set-up. I'm also going to borrow an idea from my grandmother's house, back in the 50's. She had a corner pantry, about 4X4 feet, with the front on the diagonal. When you opened the door, there were lots of shallow shelves with all sorts of things on them. Best of all, the back of the pantry door had pegboard, with all the cooking utensils hanging on hooks. No more rummaging through crowded drawers to find the right spatula! Being a guy, I look at the kitchen as a work space, just like the machine shop I work in. As such, tools are laid out neatly near where you use them. I'll even outline the pegboard with the various utensils, so again, you can tell at a glance where everything goes. I keep my garage organized that way- why not the kitchen? Maybe I need to get a big 12 drawer rolling toolbox like I use at work, paint it 'kitchen' colors, and stock it with kitchen utensils, LOL!...See MoreReusing Old Kitchen Cabinets in Basement- Need Ideas!
Comments (3)We took some old cabinets out of our cabin and used them in my studio, I painted them with a dark blue, and copper paint, using a rag roll method, We put them along one wall, and I now have storage for my supplies. If you have a space that is open, start there, even drawing how you might want to use them. If its in the laudry room, or even for stuff that you keep in storage most of the time. We also got some old cabinets from my work and put them along the long wall in the garage, uppers and lowers, they now serve as a storage for kids sports equipment, car stuff, and animal treats. Along with my own paint sprayers, and chemicals...See MoreCreative ideas needed for space above fridge
Comments (22)The horizontal hinge is nice because it holds the door open. An ordinary hinge will allow it to fall closed if not held up by you or something. So not absolutely needed but nice to have. Check with Ikea, I have the impression that, although they don't show the lift-up hinges separately in the website, they could be bought separately. Or, I think that if you bought the cabinet, it might be possible to just keep the hinges and return the rest of the cabinet. (I think this because I have read how people created custom sized cabinets by putting parts of various standard ones together, then returned the extra pieces.) Someone on the Ikeafans website might know the answer -- or just call Ikea. If the base cabinet on its side isn't the right width for the space, then you could get a 30" tall wall cab with door and another wall cab without door, put the cabs together to fill the whole depth of space. Just carefully measure your dimensions and the dimensions of the cabinets. Return the extra rear wall....See More- 5 years ago
