Comments (104)I found lots of stuff on the web about using ammonia to clean the oven -- put a bowl or pot of ammonia into a heated (though currently off) oven, leave it overnight, and in the morning simply wipe all the crud out. I did use this trick for the oven shelves -- put the shelves in a black trash bag with a cup of ammonia and leave overnight, then rinse them clean in the morning. The oven shelves looked like *new* when I took them out and washed them off. I have no doubt ammonia would have worked like a charm in the oven as well, except that after 15 minutes I was sure that we were all going to be asphyxiated in the night by the ammonia fumes, so I took the bowl out. What I ended up using was basically baking soda and vinegar and water, mixed together. Yes, you get a fizzy mess when the baking soda and vinegar mix. Once that cooled down, I coated the entire inside of the oven with the goop, as much as I possibly could. I let it stand over night. The next morning, using a sponge (frequently washed out), I wiped out the entire inside of the oven. That oven looked pretty damn good after that. Yes, elbow grease was involved, but it smelled okay (and it was immediately obvious where I hadn't wiped, because it still had white streaks). In the future: I'm going to try to get on top of spills/messes earlier (I bought a mat for the bottom of the oven now), and I'm going to use the baking soda/vinegar trick. If you want things to be really easy and you don't mind a strong smell, the ammonia is amazing. Here is a link that might be useful: Baking soda and vinegar...See Morerange hood fo Lacanche
Comments (18)bake_sale, do you have any photos of your Cluny + Hood that you can share? I also have a La Canche range (Cluny) and am looking into installing a much-needed hood over it. Here's a photo of my range and the cabinet over it (click for fullsize): I hate to cover up any of the vintage tile, but the smoke and grease in the kitchen are getting out of hand (click for fullsize): So I'm looking at getting a black hood possibly with some stainless and brass embellishments to try to match the range but not out-cutesify the rest of this adorable little kitchen. I've been mostly looking at Vent-A-Hood bc of their performance record. But I can't decide between the 600cfm model and the 900cfm model. 600cfm will be much easier to install (bc it's only one duct) and the ductwork will consume less of the cabinet space so it will be mostly unnoticeable. The 900cfm has 2 ducts and will consume a bit more cabinet space and might look weird bc you will see more ductwork in that cabinet over the range. Do you think 600 will be enough? The Cluny requires 600-900cfm, but the ventahood people say that their 600cfm is like 900cfm with normal hoods (since they use a squirrel cage fan and don't pull the air through any filters). FYI, * the duct only has 5 feet to go (mostly horizontally) to vent outside. * the hood will be 8" or so higher than the mfg recommendation. * the kitchen is very small (about four Clunys' area). * i cook with lots of heat and fat. Thanks!...See MoreWhat size hood for Citeaux Lacanche Range?
Comments (7)Do you have the stainless steel work surface in one area? You must with a 5 burner. That would make the burner surface around 42" wide. In general, I don't understand why (except for looks) installing a hood over just the surface that contains burners wouldn't be ok? This range, tho, I'm thinking they spec non-combustible materials for the wall behind it. They are kinda peculiar about installation. So I think I'd call the dealer and ask about that. Plus a fair number of localities ban range installations in front of a window. Here we can call the building inspectors for an opinion in advance - maybe you can too? I'd do it and ask about both things before I got too committed (i.e. fell in love) with the layout....See MoreWhat style hood goes with Lacanche Cormatin range
