after the civil war, all kinds of counterfeit money was being produced by unscrupulous people. It would have bankrupt the United States and done harm to many business and peoples. The secret service was created then to help stop the counterfeit money being produced. Later it was used to help protect our president. This is pretty much well know by history buffs like myself.

I know it has something to do with money because it used to be (and maybe still is) part of the Treasury Department.
