Master Bath: Shower only or tub/shower combo?
Comments (7)Thanks for all your thoughts! homeybird- we did briefly consider the wetroom idea, however, we're in Maine (brrrrrr), this room has 3 exterior walls and a poorly insulated floor, AND we need to be a little more traditional for resale. igloochic- Well, right now there IS no office. That is all part of a gigantically long master bedroom. It's stupid space in my opinion. I work at home and NEED an office, so right now my desk is set up there, open to the bedroom. I HATE it. Hate the computer lights and hum, hate seeing the piles and cords. I want my bedroom to be a calm place to escape and unwind. This house is teeny, so there is NO other place for my office to go. (Plus, we think being able to claim 3BR is a plus for resale. Target market will either be a young family or retired couple. Either way it seems like 2 normal-sized bedrooms and a small nursery or home office is a desireable combo. Honestly, there's no other place in the house where a home office could go....) weedyacres- I'll play around with that but my DH is going to be mad. We're having a heck of a bad year, renovation-wise. We started the kitchen/LR/DR renovation in April and soon discovered some very major drainage problems. We'd hoped to complete the exterior renovations this fall but the money we had to spend on the stupid drainage problems has left us utterly broke. Then DH got temporarily furloughed and I am not working either, and both cars are dying. It's baaaaad. BUT we HAVE to address this bathroom this month because it is -quite literally- making me sick. There is a huge mold problem in there. It's sealed off with painters tape right now because I was so sick from it. DH is going to have to cut a hole in the exterior wall, go in there and start gutting it until he finds the source of the mold (we suspect it is in the insulation, possibly the sheathing and studs, hope not!!). ANYWAY. It is not the best scenario to start a renovation. The kitchen's still not done either. And we're out of money. So we're leery of making too many changes. Even doing it all ourselves, having to reframe and redrywall and trim out all those extra walls is sure to add at least a grand, don't you think? Plus, our Washer & dryer are currently in the north closet...... WEll, I will draw it out and play around with it...... thanks for thinking outseide the box anyway....See MoreMaster Suite: Walk-in Closet or Shower?
Comments (32)I vote for #3 first. If you are a bath taker, then having a bath in the master would be lovely. You could also do a deck mount shower setup with a hose and shower head on it (I forget what that is called). We just renovated our master bedroom and bath and removed the shower from the master bathroom altogether. We have 2 other full baths in the house. 1 is the family bathroom near the all bedrooms and the other is in the bsmt. When we moved in, the ugly master bath floor had a crack in it, so we assumed there was a leak in the shower. We knew we'd be reno-ing so it was no big deal. We just used the shower as a closet, and did not turn the spigots once in 4+ years. Our new master bath was to have a luxury steam shower unit because we could not fit in a tub (dh extremely disappointed in that). After playing around with the plan more, we realized we'd rather have more closet and floor space and could skip the shower. Dh gets up early and showers in the family bathroom. If we had one in our master, it might wake me up. We felt that with 4 people, there was little chance we'd need to have 3 showers running at the same time. Even if we wanted, I am not sure the hot water would hold up to 3 simultaneous showers! We sold the shower unit on CL and really like the new layout of our bedroom. Our closet is fabulous and our furniture fits in perfectly. As a real estate agent, I know a 3rd full bath would add value on an appraisal, but I bet lots of buyers would someday love our spacious organized closet and we designed the bathroom so that someone can add a shower without doing much more than moving the doorway and wall. The toilet and sink could even stay in the same place and remain untouched. Besides, we have no plans on moving anytime soon. BTW - our family bathroom has a jetted tub that dh & I use every single day. One ds prefers showers, but the younger one can spend over an hour in the tub. We had to do without when reno started for a few weeks, and were miserable only using the shower downstairs. I'd never buy a house that either did not or could not have a tub....See MoreMaster Bath Shower Floor
Comments (20)Just to throw our $0.02 in the mix: We love our pebble/flat stone tiles, and when installed correctly (with the right products) you can have a very stylish and durable shower floor. Some things to keep in mind: These types of tiles are often irregular in shape and size, and have varying grout joint widths & depths; so Flexcolor CQ would not be the best choice. (Under limitations on the TDS we actually warn against using it in these scenarios) Rather, use Ultracolor Plus FA, as it can handle joints from 1/16” up to 3/4" wide/deep. Pebbles/stones are natural stone and will need to be sealed. (Sealing before grouting will make things easier on the installer) Sealing will become a maintenance duty (so get a quality sealer), once the stone begins to darken when wet, this usually means its time for another coat. Some more textured stones will not drain properly with a standard shower floor pitch, and the pitch will need to be increased to the drain. Plus you can always call our Technical Department at 1-800-992-6273 if you’re ever unsure....See MoreWhat shower walls go with Cambria Skara Brae counters in master bath?
Comments (21)Thanks for asking Kerrica. With the pandemic, we have been in limbo. Our bathroom is torn apart, prepped and ready to go as soon as things open up. We've decided to go with Taj Mahal quartzite for the counters and a "wood" porcelain tile for the floor. We want to extend the floor tile into the shower with a linear drain. I have to agree with others that, if we go with a natural stone for the counters we should go with a natural stone in the shower, However, I'm having a hard time finding something that goes well with the Taj. We're thinking of using large tiles to avoid too much grout. Slabs for the shower seem too expensive and have too many installation problems. Any suggestions on shower tile would be most appreciated! We are open to other flooring options if it would go better with the shower tile....See MoreStecki Construction
