Installing Barn Doors with Transom Above

Michael Hammond

I am interested in hanging barn doors in these two doorways for our office but am concerned with how I would hang the track. One door way is 36 inches wide and the other is roughly 50 inches wide.

These doors are going to be made from 2x8 wood and will be somewhat heavy (>100 lbs) and I don't believe screwing into the bottom board of the transom would provide enough support (in addition to screwing into studs to the side of the door frame). Does anyone have any experience with this?

Also - any suggestions on how to attack the trim at the bottom of the doorway? I feel like the door will be really far away from the wall if I attempt to miss the quarter round. The only other option I can think of is to hang the door higher than the trim and thus leaving a gap which is not ideal.
